Glaucoma is a tricky condition that involves increased intraocular pressure leading to damage to the optic nerve, often causing vision loss. From an Ayurvedic perspective, we seek to balance the doshas, especially if Pitta and Vata are involved, and strengthen the ocular tissues, or netra dhatus. Now, while Ayurveda can assist in managing symptoms and promoting eye health, restoration of lost vision due to optic nerve damage is quite challenging even with conventional treatments. Here's what we might consider from the Ayurvedic standpoint. Triphala is traditionally known for supporting eye health. You can gently wash your eyes with Triphala-infused water; soak a spoonful of Triphala powder overnight in water and strain it in the morning. This practice is believed to soothe the eyes but should be done cautiously. Ghee, or clarified butter, particularly in the form of Netra Tarpana, where the eyes are bathed in medicated ghee, is another classical treatment. But this is one to be conducted under guidance of an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner in a clinical setting, considering your condition. Diet is another aspect where you can make helpful changes; incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, like green leafy vegetables, carrots, and fruits like berries, which nourish the eyes. Staying hydrated and reducing caffeine may also support overall eye wellness. Lifestyle-wise, regular eye exercises, or palming methods, where you gently cup your palms over your eyes to block out light, can help relax your eye muscles. Ensure your neck and back aren't strained during daily activities to support proper blood flow to your eyes. However, a crucial aspect is acknowledging the boundaries of Ayurvedic treatments corresponding to the stage of your condition. If the optic nerve is significantly damaged, it's usually irreversible. Continue following your ophthalmologist's advice, keep monitoring your intraocular pressure closely, and bring holistic practices into your routine to augment your current medical strategy as part of an integrative approach. In acute worsening of symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
