can we eat mango and curd together - #23543

James

I am really confused about something I read the other day. I was sitting with my grandma, and she loves mangoes — I mean, who doesn't right? So, I asked her if we can eat mango and curd together since I saw a recipe that had this combo. But she totally flipped out and was like, "No way! That's a bad idea!" I thought mangoes and curd would make a refreshing dish for summer. I used to enjoy it as a kid, but now I’m worried I might be doing something wrong. I’ve heard some people say curd's cooling properties mix badly with mango's warmth, like they for some reason clash? Honestly, when I think about it, what could happen if we eat mango and curd together? Are there really digestion issues or is grandma just being overly cautious? I also noticed that sometimes I feel a bit bloated after eating these two together. I’m just looking for some clarity. Can we eat mango and curd together, or should I be avoiding that??

Eating mango and curd together is a topic that does come up often, especially in the realm of Ayurveda. In this traditional practice, food combinations play an important role in maintaining a balanced doshic state and preventing potential digestion issues. Your grandma's concern isn’t all that uncommon, as certain combinations are considered incompatible or "viruddha ahara." Mango, packed with natural sugars, is predominantly heating in nature and classified as having sweet and sour rasas (tastes). Curd, on the other hand, also has a sour qualitative and is known to be heavy, and cooling in effect. When these two are consumed together, it can create a mixed signal for your digestive fire or "agni." This disharmony might not be easily digestible for everyone, and could lead to digestion issues like bloating, as you've experienced. From an Ayurvedic perspective, curd is often recommended to be taken with caution. It is best consumed by itself or with spices like pepper or ginger to aid digestion. When curd and mango are combined, their contrasting properties might confuse the digestive enzymes, leading to fermentation, and possibly resulting in gas or bloating. If you enjoyed this combo as a kid, you might have not felt its effects back then because children often have a stronger digestive capability. Now, if you feel any discomfort after eating them together, it's a sign to approach this combination with care. Listen to your body’s responses. For those who really wish to enjoy this combination occasionally, perhaps consume it in small quantities, or pair with digestive aids like powdered ginger or mint leaves. Also consider having it when your body's agni is at its peak, usually around noon. However, if there's any persistent discomfort, appetitie loss, or other symptoms, it might be best to listen to your grandma and avoid this mix, focusing on other harmonious combinations. Always prioritize your digestive comfort and body's signals above culinary cravings!
