how many types of hair cutting - #38035

Lily

I am really curious about something that’s been bugging me lately. I've been trying to figure out how many types of hair cutting exist because I feel so lost whenever I sit in the salon chair! Last week, I went in for a trim, thinking I wanted a simple layered look, but ended up with a choppy bob that I did NOT ask for. My hair stylist mentioned different hair cutting techniques but didn’t really elaborate on it. I read somewhere that there’s not just one or two styles like layering or blunt cuts but a ton of other choices depending on face shapes or hair textures. I’ve seen people rock the razored edges and others with texturizing, and honestly, it gets overwhelming. I don’t even know how many types of hair cutting are commonly practiced! Could someone break it down for me? Like, what are the major hair cutting styles and how do they actually differ? I mean, do different cuts suit different hair types or lengths? And what should I be asking for next time, you know? Any advice would be super appreciated because I really don’t wanna end up in another choppy situation!

Doctors' responses

I’m an ayurvedic physician specializing in health-related concerns, so my expertise primarily revolves around holistic well-being and not specifically hair styling. However, I understand how choices about hair can feel overwhelming, as they intertwine with personal health and identity. While I can’t provide specific hair cutting techniques, allowing an experienced stylist to make recommendations based on personal preferences, facial aesthetics, and lifestyle, might be beneficial.

Considering your interest, some popular hair cutting styles include layered cuts, blunt cuts, bobs, pixies, and shags, among others. Each of these styles has unique characteristics. Layered cuts typically add movement and volume to the hair, making them suitable for various hair types and textures. They can enhance the natural waves or curls, and are often adjusted to fit different face shapes.

Blunt cuts, however, tend to have a solid, single-length look, emphasizing thickness, often better-suited for straight hair. A bob is a versatile cut that can vary between chin-length to shoulder-length, straight or with layers for added texture. Pixies are shorter, often around the ears, complementing those with delicate facial features.

In Ayurveda, your prakriti or unique constitution can influence hair health. If your hair feels dry or thin, it’s crucial to balance Vata dosha with nourishing oils, such as sesame or coconut oil, and to maintain a moisturized scalp. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients also supports healthy hair. For personalized advice about what might suit your hair types and face shape best, consult a professional who aligns with your aesthetic goals.

For clearer communication with your stylist, try bringing photos of desired looks and discussing how they might be adapted to fit your hair type and lifestyle. It enhances understanding and helps in crafting a mutually satisfying result.
