I have been battling ulcers for more than 10 years. I have used and continue using western medicine but it's worsening. What can I do? Which Ayurvedic drugs or treatments and guidelines should I follow?

Ulcers can be frustrating to manage, especially when they persist despite conventional treatments. Ayurveda offers a holistic perspective, focusing on correcting imbalances in the body, particularly the doshas, digestive fire (agni), and tissues (dhatus). When considering Ayurvedic approaches for ulcers, it’s essential to identify the underlying doshic imbalance.

Firstly, understanding if your ulcers are linked with vata, pitta, or kapha imbalance is crucial. Ulcers are often related to a pitta imbalance - characterized by excessive heat and acidity. Reducing this heat can help. Incorporating cooling, pitta-pacifying foods such as cucumber, melons, and bitter leafy greens is beneficial. Minimize or avoid spicy, oily and fried foods, as they can aggravate the condition further.

Ayurvedic herbs such as yashtimadhu (licorice root) can help soothe and heal ulcers due to its anti-inflammatory and mucilaginous properties. Take yashtimadhu powder mixed with warm water or milk daily, one hour before breakfast. Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) is another excellent choice for managing ulcers. Consuming amalaki powder with honey twice daily can be effective.

Additionally, Triphala, a trio of powdered fruits, is known to balance all three doshas and support digestion. Consume half a teaspoon with warm water before bedtime.

It’s also important to emphasize lifestyle changes. Ensure regular meals, don’t skip breakfast, and avoid long gaps between meals. Prioritize stress management through practices like yoga and meditation, as stress can exacerbate ulcers.

If you’re smoking or consuming alcohol, it’s imperative to reduce or eliminate these habits, as they can further compromise the healing process. Drinking warm, boiled water throughout the day keeps hydration in check and maintains digestive balance.

Remember, Sattvic practices - that include eating tranquil and fresh meals, engaging in positive thought patterns - plays a role in staying in balance. While Ayurvedic principles and herbs can complement your existing treatments, it’s vital to continue to stay in touch with your healthcare provider, ensuring all interventions harmonize together without contraindications. If you notice worsening symptoms, consult your doctor promptly.
