is curd good for weight loss - #23206

Levi

I am really confused about if curd is good for weight loss or not. So, I’ve been trying to shed some pounds for like the past few months, and I came across all this info about curd. I started eating it every morning, thinking it might help, you know? But then I read somewhere that dairy can actually make it harder to lose weight?? I mean, I feel like I’m bloated sometimes after having it. Is curd good for weight loss or is it just a myth? I would really love to hear from some Ayurvedic experts if I should continue with it or cut back. Need some clarity!

Curd, or yogurt as it is sometimes called, can be both beneficial or detrimental for weight loss, based on your individual constitution or prakriti in Ayurveda, which is determined by the balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In Ayurveda, curd is generally considered to have heavy, sour and sweet qualities, which can potentially aggravate Kapha dosha if taken in large quantities or at inappropriate times. This can lead to weight gain, sluggish digestion or even a feeling of being bloated.

If your prakriti is predominantly Kapha, it’s best to consume curd in moderation, or preferring other lighter fermented milk products like buttermilk. Buttermilk retains some of the beneficial properties of curd, but without the heaviness that can increase Kapha. Prepare it by churning out the butter from curd, and adding spices like cumin or ginger to support digestion. On the other hand, if your dominant doshas are Vata or Pitta, you might find curd aids digestion and provides nourishment, but still, be mindful and consume it in small amounts.

Another important aspect is the timing of consumption. Avoiding curd at night is particularly emphasized in Ayurveda because it can cause an imbalance by increasing Kapha and decreasing Agni (digestive fire) during the night. Consuming it during the day and preferably during lunch might be better. And regarding bloating, it could be due to the cooling nature of curd, which sometimes might slow down the digestion if your agni (digestive fire) is weak.

For best results, try consuming curd with a pinch of rock salt or black pepper, which can enhance digestibility. Always opt for fresh, home-made curd rather than store-bought varieties, as it ensures purity and minimal preservatives. Pay attention to your body’s response, and if bloating persists, it might be wise to discontinue and observe any changes. It’s also advisable to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to get a personal assessment that’s centered on your specific dosha balance, lifestyle, and health goals.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
