how to eat honey - #25200

Michael

I am really struggling with something and I need some help about how to eat honey. I recently started incorporating honey into my daily routine, reading all these articles about its benefits! But honestly, I have no idea if I'm doing it right. I usually just drizzle it on toast or mix it in my tea, but are there other ways? I’ve heard different things on how to eat honey, like whether to take it raw, or should it be heated? Sometimes I feel like I might be missing the point, especially since I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather lately. I've got a little cough and my immune system could really use a boost! And I heard that honey can help with that, but am I using it correctly?? I read somewhere that you shouldn't mix honey with hot water, cause it might lose its nutrients or something. Is that legit? Any tips on how to eat honey, like specific recipes or pairings? Honestly, I feel overwhelmed and just want to do this right! Any thoughts would really be awesome!

When you’re using honey in your daily routine, understanding a few principles from Ayurveda might help you maximize its benefits. First off, honey is considered a revered food in Ayurveda, known for its various health-promoting properties. It’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and can be particularly soothing for a cough, like the one you’re dealing with.

Here are a few things to keep in mind about consuming honey. Ayurveda indeed suggests you eat honey raw rather than heating it. When honey is exposed to high temperatures, it can lose some of its medicinal qualities. So yes, try avoiding adding honey to boiling water or hot tea. Let your tea cool down a bit before stirring in honey.

For your immune system and cough relief, you might enjoy a simple honey-lemon mixture. Just mix a teaspoon of raw honey with a few drops of fresh lime juice. It helps soothe your throat and boost immunity, best taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Alternatively, a paste of ginger and honey might ease your cough, with the added zing of ginger enhancing honey’s natural benefits.

When it comes to pairings, honey works well on whole grain toast, like you’re already doing, or over yogurt or oatmeal, bringing out a nice sweetness. You might also indulge in honey mixed with warm milk or turmeric milk before bed; turmeric combined with honey gives a powerful health boost.

Another idea is to sprinkle honey over freshly cut fruits, or as a natural sweetener you can incorporate it in salad dressings, too. Just be careful — too much honey can aggravate certain conditions, especially if taken in large quantities. Ayurveda advocates moderation, so resist overindulgence.

Remember, some individuals find honey hard to digest if they have weak agni (digestive fire). Seeing you’re under weather, you might want to start small, gradually increasing your dose if your body responds well. Taking honey alongside an overall balanced, seasonal, and dosha-appropriate diet will support your body’s defense mechanisms and provide the boost you seek.
