can i eat curd after eating chicken - #25222

Hailey

I am super confused about my food habits lately. Last week, I had this really yummy chicken curry, and right after, I felt like having some curd, which I always thought was good for digestion. But then, I remembered someone telling me that like, "can I eat curd after eating chicken?" Maybe it’s just the old myth? I have this friend who keeps saying mixing the two is bad for your health. Should I worry about that? I mean, I do love my curd, especially with spices, but what if there's actually something to it? I felt fine after having both, no upset tummy or whatever, but still, is there any truth to this whole "can I eat curd after eating chicken" thing? Does it really mess with my digestion or something? Looking for some solid advice, cause I don’t want to end up with issues later!

Eating curd right after chicken is a topic that’s generated various opinions in Ayurveda. The classical Ayurvedic texts like Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita don’t specifically restrict the combination of chicken and curd. However, they emphasize the importance of maintaining balance, harmony, and understanding the impact of food on your doshas and agni (digestive fire).

Chicken is considered ‘tamasic’ and ‘rajas’, while curd is ‘tamas’ and also has some ‘ushna’ (hot) quality. Now, tamasic foods can sometimes lead to a feeling of heaviness, possibly affecting digestion, as they can be harder to process. Curd, especially fresh and spiced, is traditionally seen to be digestive aid, though ayurveda advises not combining proteins and dairy together when possible.

The underlying concern would be about potential aggravation of kapha and pitta doshas, leading to digestive troubles or excess mucus production. However, if you have generally good digestion, are physically active, and didn’t experience discomfort after consuming them together, then your body might tolerate the combination quite well. As always, personal digestive capacity plays a big role.

For those aware of their prakriti (constitution), it may be beneficial to keep your meals simple and not mix too many heavy or opposing qualities at once. For instance, if you’re Kapha predominant, try spacing out when you consume chicken and curd.

If you do choose to eat both, consider a few tips to aid digestion: include digestive spices like cumin or ginger, allow a few hours between the two, and consume both foods in moderation. If you find yourself experiencing any sort of digestive unease, it may be best to avoid this combination in the future.

It’s key to always listen to your body’s signals. If you find it doesn’t suit you over time, adjusting your diet accordingly is wise. But if you’re feeling fine, your digestion seems robust, and you enjoy it, there may be no need for undue worry.
