can we eat curd with mango - #25245

Harper

I am really confused about this whole thing with eating curd and mango together. Last week, I was at my aunt's place, and she served this delicious mango with curd, right? I thought it was odd since everyone always says mixing fruits with dairy can cause stomach issues, and I’ve experienced it! I feel like every time I have curd, especially the heavy kind, I get this weird bloating sensation. But then there’s this tangy sweet flavor when I mix them that I can’t resist! I asked my cousin if curd with mango is good or bad, and she said it just depends on your body type. But now I’m wondering, like, can we eat curd with mango, though? I’ve seen some Ayurvedic sources saying it’s ok, while others warn against it. My digestion hasn’t been the best lately, maybe it’s all in my head? I kinda just want to enjoy my mangoes without the worry. Any thoughts on this whole curd and mango combo? Would love some clarity on what to do here!

Eating curd with mango is a bit controversial in Ayurveda, and you’re right to have heard mixed opinions on it. According to Ayurvedic principles, certain food combinations can affect our Agni (digestive fire) and lead to imbalance in our doshas. Generally, combining sour curd with sweet fruits like mango can be difficult for digestion and may lead to the symptoms you’re experiencing, like bloating. This is because sour and sweet foods can have opposing effects on our digestive system.

Your cousin is partially right—your individual body’s constitution, or prakriti—or specific condition called vikriti, can dictate how well or poorly you tolerate these foods together. Especially if your digestion’s not at its peak, you’re experiencing what Ayurveda may describe as low Agni, which will make it harder for your body to process such combos.

If you are experiencing bloating, it could be useful to separate the intake of mango and curd. Try having mango in mild or cooked form, such as steamed or stewed, which can make it easier to digest. Curd, especially the homemade variety, should be consumed at room temperature and ideally not at night. If you have a Kapha or Vata dosha predominance, be more cautious with this combination, as it could exacerbated these doshas.

Still, if you enjoy the pairing, consider modifying your approach (without feeling guilty!). Maybe add a pinch of warming spices like ginger or black pepper to the curd can mitigate its heaviness and aid digestion. Wait at least one hour between consuming these foods separately if you still wish to enjoy both without disrupting your digestion.

Ultimately, observe how your body responds and adjust accordingly. If your symptoms persist, you may benefit from the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide personalized dietary recommendations based on your unique constitution and imbalances.
