How to treat a daily constant headache - #20131
I have had headache which started over 20 years but for the last 5 years it's a daily constant headache. I have been treating migraines but now the meds don't help. The pain is on the left side but a few times it's on the right or both sides. I don't get any aura. Have carried out several tests including CT Scan, and MRI and they all don't show any issues. I have also had eye check ups and dental.

Given the long history of your headaches and the constant nature of the pain, it seems essential to consider an Ayurvedic approach that delves into possible dosha imbalances. From an Ayurvedic perspective, headaches could be attributed to imbalances in Vata or Pitta doshas, sometimes Kapha, especially if accompanied by heaviness.
First, let’s consider incorporating dietary modifications. To pacify Vata dosha, which often contributes to pain that’s shifting or throbbing, focus on warm, cooked meals. Soups and stews with ghee, and spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom can be beneficial. For Pitta, which might result in sharp, intense pain, cooling foods such as cucumber, melons, and astringent teas like mint are ideal. Avoid fermented foods, fried items, and excessive spices which may exacerbate the headaches.
As a lifestyle measure, attempting to regularize sleep patterns can significantly impact headache frequency and intensity. Aim for a sleep routine that ensures consistent rest, ideally between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Daily self-massage (abhyanga) using warm sesame oil can soothe Vata, while coconut oil might be more apt if Pitta is the culprit.
Consider engaging in gentle yoga or pranayama exercises, such as Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), which balance energy channels and promote tranquility. Meditation or mindfulness practices might also assist in reducing stress, a typical headache trigger.
Moreover, Ayurvedic remedies like Brahmi or Ashwagandha might be explored; Brahmi can calm the mind, while Ashwagandha strengthens nerves. Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor these herbs to your constitution.
While Ayurveda offers a holistic perspective, continuous headaches warrant consistent communication with healthcare providers. Ayurveda should complement your ongoing care, not replace recommended conventional intervention where urgency or necessity dictates. If the intensity or pattern of your headache changes abruptly, seek medical advice promptly, reassuring your comprehensive health remains a priority.
