Doctors’ responses
In Ayurveda, managing pain associated with avascular necrosis (AVN) can be approached through a combination of pain-relieving and tissue-strengthening herbs that support joint health without causing harm to other organs, such as the kidneys. One commonly recommended Ayurvedic remedy is a formulation containing herbs like Ashwagandha, Shallaki (Boswellia), Guggulu, and Turmeric. These herbs have natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that help reduce pain and inflammation in the affected joints while also promoting circulation to the area.
Ashwagandha is known for its adaptogenic properties, which help manage stress and support the body's overall healing process, while Shallaki and Guggulu are specifically known for their effectiveness in managing joint pain and inflammation. Turmeric, with its active compound curcumin, offers powerful anti-inflammatory benefits and helps improve mobility and function in the joints.
An example of an Ayurvedic formulation you may consider is a combination tablet that includes these herbs, such as "Rumalaya" or "Orthomol," which are often used to address joint pain and inflammation in conditions like AVN. These formulations are typically safe for long-term use when taken in appropriate doses, as they are designed to be gentle on the kidneys and liver, unlike conventional allopathic painkillers.
It is important, however, to consult with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner who can customize the treatment based on your specific needs and overall health status, especially considering the age factor. In addition, Ayurveda recommends combining such tablets with lifestyle changes like specific joint exercises, dietary modifications, and local applications such as oil massages with Mahanarayan oil or Sesame oil to support joint health and reduce stiffness. Consistent use of these remedies, along with a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, can help manage pain and improve quality of life for AVN patients.

Avascular necrosis (AVN) can be a challenging condition, especially when considering pain management. In Ayurveda, we aim not just to manage pain but to address the root cause and bring balance back to the body. There are some traditional Ayurvedic remedies that might help with pain without the harsh side effects of allopathic painkillers.
You might want to consider exploring herbs like Shallaki (Boswellia serrata) and Guggulu which has been used traditionally for similar issues. Shallaki helps with inflammation and pain, acting as a natural alternative. I'll give you a heads-up though – always ensure you're sourcing these herbs in a reputable form and under guidance, as individual reactions can vary.
Aswagandha might also be beneficial, not directly for pain but in supporting bone strength and reducing stress, which can be factors in AVN. Again, the key here is consistency and proper guidance. One widely-used classical formulation for joint health and pain management in Ayurveda is Yogaraja Guggulu, which may help, but it’s important to ensure it’s aligned with your prakriti.
Beyond herbs, pay attention to diet and lifestyle – foods that aggravate Vata may worsen pain, so warm, cooked foods with good fats like ghee could be helpful. Maintaining a warm environment and staying hydrated with warm fluids can also be surprisingly beneficial.
Remember, regular follow-ups with your Ayurvedic doctor or practitioner are essential. They’ll adjust recommendations based on how you respond over time. This isn't a one-size-fits-all approach at all – everyone's constitution and needs are different. Also, just a nudge – always check in with your primary doctor regarding any serious pain to ensure there's nothing that needs urgent medical attention. Safety first, then harmony, you know?
