does curd make you sleepy - #25330

Abigail

I am really confused about something and hope you guys can help. Recently, I started having curd at night before bed, trying to be a little healthier. But, I noticed that after eating curd, I feel super drowsy. I mean, does curd make you sleepy??! My mom always said it was good, but now, it’s like I can't keep my eyes open even if it’s only 8 PM. Last night, I had a decent portion of curd with some fruit and an hour later, I was struggling to stay awake on the couch! I also read somewhere that curd is packed with nutrients and it's supposed to be good for digestion. I don’t know, maybe it's just me? I used to feel more energized after meals, not ready to crash. Should I stop eating curd at night or is there a balance? Does curd make you sleepy for everyone, or do people react differently? I seem to remember my friend joking that she felt the same way too, but is it normal?? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Curd is a wholesome, nutritious food, and its effect on your energy levels can vary based on individual constitution or health status. In Ayurveda, it is generally believed that curd can have a heavy and cooling quality, especially when consumed in the evening or at night. This heaviness might make you feel sleepy since it can slow down your digestion and lead to a feeling of lethargy. One important aspect to consider is your dosha constitution or imbalance—Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. For instance, curd is heavier and more adhesive, which can aggravate Kapha or Pitta doshas, potentially leading to drowsiness or sluggishness. If Kapha dosha is dominant or imbalanced in you, it's common to experience such effects. Also, consuming curd in excessive quantities or at night is not preferable in Ayurveda for these reasons. If you find that curd causes sleepiness, you might want to consider having it earlier in the day, say for lunch instead of dinner. Try moderating the portion size and observe if that makes any difference. Another suggestion could be adding some spices like cumin or black pepper when you have curd, as they aid in digestion and might counteract the heaviness. Having curd is indeed beneficial for digestion and packed with probiotics, but the timing and manner of consumption can be adjusted based on what your body signals. Individuals react differently to certain foods, and it's all about finding what works best for you, personally. You can also opt for buttermilk, which is lighter and easier to digest during dinner. Experiment a little with the timing and accompaniments when you have curd, and see if it changes how you feel afterward. If you still experience drowsiness, it might be helpful to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can guide you with personalized advice tailored to your unique constitution.
