What is the easiest to digest whole grain for a 54-year-old vegan who has trouble with healthy grains? - #55801
Easy to digest whole grain? I am 54, eating vegan, very slim-and can not digest 'healthy' whole grains well. I love white (Basmati) rice; but unpolished (red) rice causes stomach cramps,...- even when I mix it half with polished rice. Proso millet may also cause bloating; foxtail millet seems to be easier to digest?? What is the easiest to digest whole grain option, according to ayurveda? Or should I just continue to eat red rice; maybe one day may body can handle it?

According to Ayurveda, if your digestion is sensitive, the “healthiest” grain is not always the best grain for your body. The easiest grain to digest is the one that supports your Agni (digestive fire) without causing bloating, cramps, or heaviness. For your body type and symptoms, well-cooked white Basmati rice is actually considered one of the lightest, gentlest, and most digestible grains in Ayurveda — especially for people with weak digestion, low body weight, bloating, or Vata aggravation. So you do not need to force red rice if it repeatedly causes cramps. Among whole grains and millets: Foxtail millet is usually lighter and easier to digest than many other millets Proso millet can increase dryness and gas in sensitive digestion Red/unpolished rice is nutritious but heavier and harder to digest for weak Agni Ayurvedic suggestions for better grain digestion: Always eat grains warm, soft, and well-cooked Add cumin, ginger, fennel, ajwain, or a little ghee while cooking Avoid very dry, raw, or cold foods Soak grains before cooking whenever possible Smaller regular meals may suit you better than large meals twice daily A very good option for you may be: Soft cooked white Basmati rice Light khichadi with mung dal Occasionally well-cooked Foxtail millet if tolerated Ayurveda does not recommend pushing the body to “get used to” foods that consistently create pain and bloating. First strengthen digestion gently; tolerance may improve gradually over time. The goal is nourishment and comfort, not forcing heavy grains in the name of health.
