Knee pain, especially chronic like your mother’s, can be a bit tough. While surgery has been recommended, there are Ayurvedic ways that might provide relief, though it’s important to note that these are supportive measures and her case should be regularly evaluated by her healthcare provider.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, joint pain often ties back to vata dosha imbalance. It can lead to dryness and aching in the joints. Focusing on pacifying vata through diet and lifestyle may be beneficial.

Diet-wise, incorporating warm, nourishing foods can be helpful. Think of meals like soups, stews, and porridges. These are easily digestible and perfect for vata balance. Encourage her to include ghee, as it lubricates the joints naturally. Spices like turmeric and ginger are natural anti-inflammatories, so using them in cooking might help reduce inflammation in the knees.

In terms of lifestyle, ensure she maintains gentle, regular movement. Yoga or simple stretching exercises can enhance flexibility and strengthen the muscles around the knees, which can help alleviate pain. But she should avoid any overly strenuous activity that could aggravate the pain. A very gentle massage using warm sesame oil or mahanarayana oil can provide significant relief and support to knees.

Drinking warm water throughout the day also supports digestion and helps keep the body hydrated.

Consider herbal formulations too, though it’s a good idea to discuss these with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Herbs such as ashwagandha and shallaki (boswellia) have shown to support joint health. Churna like dashmool can also be helpful in this context.

However, if the pain persists or worsens, or if there are any signs of severe complications (extreme redness, inability to walk), seeking immediate medical intervention is necessary.

Staying away from cold foods, drinks, and exposure to cold winds will also prevent aggravation of vata.

Before making any changes, consult with your mother’s doctor, and particularly an Ayurvedic specialist, to tailor these recommendations specifically to her. Regular check-ins will ensure she’s getting the most suitable care.
