is yogurt and curd same - #23203

Hailey

I am really confused about yogurt and curd. So, I recently started trying to improve my gut health, right? I noticed some recipes mention yogurt while others say curd, and now I'm like, are they the same? I mean, I love eating curd with my meals, and I tried some yogurt as well, but they taste kinda different, don’t you think? Also, I hear people say yogurt has probiotics and all, but does curd have that too? Should I stick with one over the other for my digestion issues? It feels overwhelming! Would love some clarity on this yogurt and curd thing. Thanks!

Yogurt and curd, though often used interchangeably, aren’t exactly the same, and this distinction can indeed be a tad overwhelming. Traditional curd from Indian homes is made by fermenting milk with a small amount of curd that has been set previously. This ‘starter’ contains naturally occurring bacteria that ferment the lactose in milk. Yogurt, on the other hand, is made with specifically cultured bacteria - Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, giving it a consistent probiotic profile.

For gut health, yogurt often gets the spotlight due to the presence of these live cultures, which are probiotic in nature. These beneficial bacteria can improve digestive health, assisting with conditions like constipation, diarrhea, and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). But, don’t discount curd; it also contains beneficial bacteria, although its probiotic content might be more variable as it depends on the culture used.

If you are trying to improve digestion, including either in your diet can be beneficial, however the consistent and specific probiotic strains in yogurt might offer a more targeted gut health benefit. Do ensure that store-bought yogurt isn’t filled with added sugars or flavors that might counter its health benefits.

In Ayurveda, curd is considered heavier to digest, which might sometimes aggravate kapha and pitta doshas if consumed excessively, especially at night. If you have a kapha or pitta imbalance, choosing yogurt, consumed in the daytime with some cumin or a pinch of black pepper, can help balance these doshas.

For digestive imbalances, such as feeling bloated or having sluggish digestion, try to consume your yogurt or curd with a sprinkle of roasted cumin, which aids digestion, enhances taste, and improves digestion fire, or agni. Moderation is key, as overconsumption can have the opposite effect.

Ultimately, it’s about how your body responds, if you find yogurt helps your digestion and enhances your gut health better, you might want to lean more towards it. Listen to your body’s signals, as Ayurveda emphasizes understanding your unique prakriti or body constitution before making dietary choices.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
