Reduce Ankle pain on one leg that aggravates with walking - #23238

Hi, a woman of 35 years has ankle pain on right leg which aggravates when she walks. There would be swelling in the area too if she walks. She used to go for walking daily previously but has now stopped due to pain. Any help

According to Ayurveda, this condition might be linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and circulation in the body. When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to pain and discomfort in the joints.

Firstly, it’s essential to support the ankle and reduce physical strain. Resting the joint is key, so avoid excessive walking or weight-bearing activities until the swelling reduces. You might find some benefit in applying warm compresses - gentle warmth can help soothe the aggravated tissues. Use warm sesame oil or mustard oil for a gentle massage around the affected area. Massaging in a circular motion can help improve blood flow and reduce Vata imbalance.

For internal support, consider adding anti-inflammatory herbs to your routine. Turmeric with a pinch of black pepper, taken with warm milk or water, has potent anti-inflammatory properties. You can also try garlic, which can improve circulation and reduce swelling. If you use such remedies, ensure they are consistent, about once or twice daily.

Your diet also plays a vital role. Stick to warm, cooked foods that balance Vata, such as soups, stews, and herbal teas. Avoid cold and raw foods that may aggravate Vata. Hydration is critical, so drink plenty of warm water throughout the day.

Yoga can also be beneficial, but be cautious and gentle. Focus on poses that do not strain the ankle, such as seated postures or gentle stretches that promote relaxation and circulation. Meditations and breathing exercises like pranayama can help to calm the mind and reduce stress, indirectly alleviating symptoms.

If the pain or swelling persists or worsens, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying conditions which might require immediate attention.
