what is hung curd - #23241

Ava

I am really confused about this hung curd thing. A friend mentioned it during lunch the other day, like they were talking about how it's super healthy, but now I can't get it outta my head! So, I googled it and saw that hung curd has loads of benefits, but I'm not sure how to make it or use it. I tried checking many recipes but still didn’t really understand what is hung curd exactly. Like, can I use it in smoothies, or is it only for savory dishes? Also, do I need special utensils or it's easy to prepare? Do I just hang regular yogurt? I mean, help?

Hung curd is basically yogurt but with less water content, resulting in a thicker, creamier consistency. It’s quite versatile and packed with benefits, indeed. To make hung curd, you’d typically start with regular plain yogurt. Let’s break it down – you take some fresh yogurt, then place it in a fine muslin cloth or a clean kitchen towel, tie it up and hang it over a bowl to let the whey drain out. Ideally, you leave it hanging for a few hours, or even overnight in the fridge for best results. The water slowly drips away, and what you’re left with is a rich and dense curd.

It’s a myth you need any special utensils for this, though a muslin cloth is quite handy. So, hang your regular yogurt, no need for any fancy gadgets, just a bowl to catch the drips. Simple!

Once you’ve got your hung curd, you could use it in a bunch of dishes. For supporting Pitta and Kapha dosha balance, hung curd can be incorporated into smoothies. Just blend it with fruits like bananas or berries, some honey and spices, like cardamom or cinnamon. The cooling effect works especially well in summer!

For savory options, it’s great in dips, spreads, or dressings. You can mix in herbs like mint, coriander, and spices like cumin or black pepper. It’s this ability to be both creamy and tangy that makes it a real star in Indian cuisine.

Remember to consume it in moderation. In Ayurveda, balance is crucial, and excess of even healthy foods can lead to an imbalance. Given its heavier nature, if you’re Kapha dominant or dealing with digestion issues, it might be wise to consume it earlier in the day when your digestive fire, or agni, is stronger to avoid any dampened digestion.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
