why we should not eat curd at night - #23799

Hudson

I am struggling to understand this whole idea of why we should not eat curd at night. Like, I grew up eating curd with dinner, and my family always said it was super healthy. But recently, I heard this thing about how it can cause a bunch of problems if you eat it late. I don’t really get it! My friend said that eating curd at night can lead to digestion issues or even bad dreams. I mean, how can something like this be true? Last week, I had a bowl of curd before bed, and I felt fine, but then again, I've, you know, read that if you're a certain body type, maybe it’s not good for you? I don’t even know what I am! Could someone explain why we should not eat curd at night? Is it just a myth or what? Just curious if anyone has any personal stories or experiences regarding this!

In Ayurveda, the consumption of curd at night is generally discouraged due to its heavy and sour nature. Curd can be aggravating to kapha dosha, which is dominant during the nighttime, and this might imbalance that dosha further. Curd is also considered “garvish” or fermented, and when consumed at night, it could lead to the accumulation of mucus, worsening conditions like colds, congestion, or sinusitis.

The other major concern is with digestion. Our digestion is typically weaker at night as the body’s agni or digestive fire tends to be lower. Curd, being heavy, can be hard to digest at this time, potentially leading to indigestion, bloating or the formation of ama, which is the undigested food and toxins that lead to poor health and diseases in Ayurveda. For someone with a kapha or pitta dominant constitution, consuming curd in the evenings might be more troublesome due to their body’s natural tendencies.

Regarding dreams, while there’s no direct ayurvedic link or mechanism confirming this, some suggest that improper digestion and resulting imbalances could disturb sleep, leading to bad dreams or restlessness. Of course, occasional consumption without any adverse effects might indicate that your digestive system handles it well, but that doesnt rule out potential long-term effects.

If you love curd and find it difficult to give up, consider having it during lunch when the digestive fire is strongest. If you’re unsure of your body type, you might want to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a precise evaluation. They can offer a detailed prakriti assessment to better tailor dietary recommendations to your unique constitution and health needs. Also, using alternatives like buttermilk (which is lighter) instead of curd at night could be another way to address your concern.

Remember, Ayurveda emphasizes balance and moderation. Small adjustments that honor your body’s needs can contribute significantly to overall health and well-being.
