does curd help in weight loss - #23933

Grayson

I am really trying to get my weight in check, and I've been hearing some buzz about whether curd helps in weight loss. My friend mentioned it the other day when we were discussing our diets, and now I'm kinda curious. I've struggled with weight gain for a few years. Did a recent check-up, and my doctor said I should focus on eating healthier. I took a look at my eating patterns and realized I’ve been enjoying a lot of junk food. Anyway, I've started incorporating more healthy stuff like fruits and veggies, and thought I’d try adding curd to my meals. I've read mixed things online about whether curd helps in weight loss—some say it can be beneficial because of the probiotics and protein, but others seem skeptical, saying it just adds calories. I mean, I'm thinking it could really be a good addition, right? What do you all think? Does curd help in weight loss on its own, or does it depend on portion sizes or what I eat it with? Any advice or experiences would be super helpful!

Curd, known as “dahi” in Ayurveda, indeed plays a unique role in weight management, but it’ll depend largely on how you incorporate it into your daily diet and routine. Curd can aid weight loss because it contains probiotics that promote healthy digestion and balanced gut flora, both important for maintaining a balanced metabolism. It’s true that curd delivers protein too, which can keep you feeling fuller for longer and potentially reduce overall calorie intake throughout the day.

In Ayurveda, curd’s properties are described as “heavy” and “unctuous,” so it’s typically considered more suitable for individuals with Vata and Pitta constitutions. For Kapha individuals or those struggling with weight gain, it might not be beneficial if consumed in excess. It is balya (strengthening) and snigdha (moistening), thus excessive intake can potentially lead to imbalance, especially for Kapha-dominant individuals. If you’re trying to kick off a weight loss journey, pay attention to the portion sizes and consider consuming it in moderation.

To maximize the benefits without negating weight loss efforts, try having curd in more of a buttermilk form—known as “takra”. Buttermilk is lighter and more digestible. Add a pinch of roasted cumin and a sprinkle of black pepper to enhance digestion. Also, opt to have curd during lunch as digestive fire, or “agni,” is generally stronger during mid-day. Avoid eating curd at night, since the body’s digestion slows down, which might opposes weight-loss efforts.

Consider pairing curd with meals rich in fibers, like salads or grated carrots, to maintain fullness throughout the day. Make sure that the curd not be chilled, warm or at room temperature should be optimal. Fermentation enhances its probiotic content, but if you’re looking out for adding calories, prioritize plain over flavored varieties that may contain added sugars. If you have any pre-existing conditions or specific dietary restrictions, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant diet changes.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
