does dahi have protein - #24051

Joshua

I am totally confused about my diet and health these days. I've been trying to eat better and I’ve read that dahi...yes, dahi, the Indian yogurt, is supposed to be good for you. But I keep wondering, does dahi have protein? Like, I started eating it more often because everyone says it's great for digestion or whatever, but I've also got this nagging thought that if I’m eating so much dahi, I need to know if it’s actually benefitting my protein intake. I’ve been feeling a bit weak lately despite eating healthy, and I thought maybe I was missing something. Tried checking online, but it’s all over the place. Some say dahi is rich in protein, while others just talk about probiotics. And I mean, it’s creamy and delicious, but how much protein are we actually talking about here? Do you think I should rely on it for protein, or do I need to find other sources too? I'm just kinda lost in all this! Thanks for any advice ya'll have!

Dahi is indeed considered a healthy food in Ayurveda and it does have protein, though it might not be as high in protein as some think. On average, dahi contains about 3-5 grams of protein per 100 grams, which isn’t exactly high compared to other protein sources like beans, lentils, or meats. So yes, it is contributing to your protein intake, but it might not be the only thing to rely on if you’re looking to up your protein levels. It’s great for digestion because of the probiotics it contains, but protein-wise, you’d probably need to incorporate more varied sources.

If you’re feeling weak, it might be due to not getting enough protein, vitamins, or minerals. In Ayurveda, each individual’s constitution or prakriti, and digestion or ‘agni’ influence dietary needs, so there’s no one-size-fits-all. Consider adding other good protein sources like legumes or nuts like almonds and seeds like chia and flax. Eggs and fish are also excellent if you consume those. They should complement the dahi in your diet well.

Timing and combinations are also key in Ayurveda. You might want to eat your main protein sources at lunch when your agni or digestive fire is strongest. This can help with better digestion and absorption of nutrients. Also, adding fresh ginger or cumin to your meals might boost your digestion, according to Ayurvedic principles.

Lastly, it’s often about balance. Though dahi is beneficial, Ayurveda suggests that overconsumption of any one food could eventually cause imbalances. So, diversify your diet to ensure you’re nourishing all the dhatus or tissues in the body. Maybe consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can assess your dosha and give more personalized advice. Remember, your lifestyle, stress levels, and even your sleep can influence overall health, so consider those too.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
