how to eat curd - #24059

Charles

I am seriously confused about how to eat curd. I recently started following an Ayurvedic diet to help balance my digestion, but I just can't figure out the right way to incorporate curd into my meals. My friend told me that curd is super beneficial, especially for gut health, so I've been trying to have it daily. But the thing is, I mixed it with fruits one day, and then I had it plain the next. I even tried with some spices, which was kinda weird but interesting?? I’ve read that there are specific ways to eat curd, like when you should eat it or not at all, depending on other food you might be having. Ugh, I just don’t get it! Sometimes I feel bloated after eating it, and I wonder if I'm doing it wrong? Also, are there any particular combinations I should avoid? I wish there was a simple guide or something. Can someone please help me figure out how to eat curd properly to get the most out of it?

Curd, or dahi as it’s often called, is indeed quite beneficial from an Ayurvedic perspective, but it has its dos and don’ts. The key is to understand how your unique dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) and digestion (agni) factors into it. Curd is sour, heavy and hot; it mainly pacifies vata but can aggravate pitta and kapha when not consumed properly.

One key point to note is that curd should be taken when your digestion is strongest, ideally around lunch. Avoid having it at night as it might lead to sluggish digestion or bloating. It can be eaten plain, but I suggest with a pinch of rock salt or black pepper to aid digestion. It works well with certain spices, like cumin and coriander powder, which can make it lighter on your system.

Combining curd with fruits, especially sour ones, is not recommended. According to Ayurveda, this combo can lead to fermentation in the gut, causing gas and bloating. Rather have it with rice or as part of a vegetable raita, ideally with cucumber or carrots.

If you’re feeling bloated, it could be due to mixing curd with inappropriate combinations or eating it when your digestion is weak. I advise consuming it in the form of buttermilk (takra), which is more easily digestible. Simply whisk curd with water (in a 1:3 ratio) and add some spices for taste and digestion.

Remember, moderation is key. Even though curd is beneficial, overconsumption, especially for kapha and sometimes pitta constitutions, can lead to heaviness and congestion. Listen to your body, observe how you feel after consuming it, and adjust accordingly. Your friend is right about its benefits; you just need to find the best way it works for you within Ayurvedic guidelines.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
