can we eat curd and mango together - #24126

Michael

I am really confused about this whole thing with curd and mango. Last weekend, I went to this family gathering, and I saw my aunt mixing curd with mango in this delicious-looking dessert. It looked amazing, but then I remembered hearing somewhere that eating curd and mango together isn’t good for health? I mean, is that really true? At first, I just enjoyed the dessert because it was tasty, but then I started feeling a bit uneasy, like my stomach wasn't sitting right. I can't tell if it was just all the food or if it was a reaction to curd and mango together. I love mangoes, especially during the summer, and curd is like a staple in my diet. Can we eat curd and mango together safely? Or is that just one of those old sayings that people hold on to? I want to enjoy my food without worrying. If anyone has any insights or experiences with curd and mango, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks a ton!

Combining curd and mango can be delightful to the taste buds, but Ayurveda does have a different perspective on mixing these two. Traditional Ayurvedic texts inform us about the concept of Viruddha Ahara, or incompatible foods. Certain food combinations can disturb your doshas, impact digestion, or produce toxins (ama) in the body. In Ayurveda, mangoes are considered to have a heating effect (ushna virya) on the system, while curd is inherently cold and can increase kapha and pitta when mixed with hot substances like mangoes.

Such combination might result in indigestion, bloating, or a kind of digestive unease you felt. Mango itself is typically sweet, sour, and heavy, which promotes kapha and pitta, while curd can potentially increase kapha and block the channels (srotas) if not properly suited. This is when the issue arises.

If you cannot resist a mango and curd treat, see to it the mangoes are ripe and sweet, and the curd is fresh and preferably homemade. Also, try limiting your serving to a small portion, and observe how your body reacts. If discomfort continues, it might be better to enjoy these two ingredients separately, like having mango during the day when digestive power is stronger, followed by curd in the latter part of the day.

Furthermore, integrating digestive enhancers like ginger or cumin can help ease the digestive process. I suggest sipping on warm herbal infusions, like ginger tea, 30 minutes after such a meal to aid digestion and balance the digestive fire.

Everyone’s digestive system reacts differently depending on their prakriti (constitution) and current dosha balance. You might want to listen to your body, noting any discomfort and working from there, as Ayurveda always inclines towards personalized dietary and lifestyle choices. Hope this helps with making your food choices more stress-free and enjoyable!
