can we eat amla and curd together - #24420

Carter

I am really curious about this whole amla and curd thing. Like, I read somewhere that combining these two might not be good for digestion?? I love amla – I add it to my smoothies – and I also enjoy a morning bowl of yogurt. But lately I've been feeling a bit off after eating them together. My stomach gets this weird bloating feeling, and I just don't know if it's because of the mix of amla and curd! I’ve been trying to eat healthier, and I’ve heard that amla is super beneficial, right? But I can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right when I have them together. 🤔 Is it possible I’m missing some important combination rule or something? Like, can we eat amla and curd together? Or should I stick to having them separately? I wish I could just enjoy my breakfast without worrying about this! Any advice would be super helpful, thanks!

The combination of amla and curd might be the culprit for the digestive discomfort you’re experiencing. In Ayurveda, combining certain foods with conflicting qualities can lead to digestive issues, and amla (Indian gooseberry) with curd (yogurt) is one such combination that could potentially disturb digestion.

Amla is indeed a powerhouse of nutrients, high in Vitamin C, and it plays a vital role in balancing the Pitta dosha. Its sour and astringent taste can increase digestive fire, whereas curd, which is sour and heavy, can increase Kapha and might dampen your digestive fire when mixed improperly. When amla and curd are combined, the qualities of these may not sync harmoniously, leading to sensations like bloating or unease.

Consider enjoying them separately to avoid this kind of unwanted bloating feeling. You could have amla during the day, say mid-morning or mid-afternoon, as part of a smoothie or simply in its raw form. It’s best consumed away from heavy or dairy meals. Meanwhile, enjoy curd alone during lunch or as a standalone snack throughout the day to cherish its probiotic benefits.

Also, pay attenttion to how your body reacts to different foods. Observing which combinations work well and which do not can be very beneficial for maintaining digestive health. If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional to rule out other underlying conditions.

In the meantime, focus on joining these foods without commingling them, and see if that helps in easing the digestive discomfort you’ve been facing. Keep track of how your body responds, it can make all the difference!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
