can egg and curd be eaten together - #24502

Riley

I am really confused about my diet lately. I started trying to eat healthier, but then I heard something that got me worried. Can egg and curd be eaten together? Like, I’ve been having omelets for breakfast almost every day and adding a little yogurt on the side, thinking it’s a good way to get protein. But then my friend said mixing egg and curd could lead to some stomach issues. Ugh, I don’t want that! I mean, a few weeks ago I tried this new breakfast recipe that involved cooking eggs with yogurt and it was actually yummy. But now I'm second-guessing myself. I also read somewhere that Ayurveda suggests avoiding certain food combos. If that's the case, can egg and curd be eaten together, or do I need to change what I’m having? I feel fine generally, just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. Hope someone can help with this!

In Ayurveda, the concept of food compatibility or “Viruddhahara” is quite vital, emphasizing that certain food combinations can disturb the balance of the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and lead to digestive issues. In this context, dairy products like curd or yogurt, and proteins like eggs are often highlighted as questionable combinations. But it doesn’t mean catastrophe if you have included them together in your diet occasionally.

The primary concern is that curd, being naturally heavy and sour, can be challenging for digestion, especially when combined with another heavy protein-dense food like eggs. This can potentially lead to digestive discomfort, as both are heavy and create ama (toxins) when not properly digested. For individuals with a predominance of Kapha dosha, this combination might be particularly heavy.

However, everyone’s Agni (digestive fire) is different. If you haven’t faced any digestive issues like bloating, gas, or a feeling of sluggishness after consuming them, your body may handling them well. Ayurveda doesn’t present an absolute ban on such combinations but suggests mindful eating. It encourages balancing meals in a way that’s suitable for one’s unique digestion and overall constitution.

If you wish to continue enjoying both, consider these adjustments: Try not to consume them together in large amounts. Perhaps having just a tiny amount of yogurt or curd as a side dish, and ensure that it’s fresh, as the sourness of old or not-fresh curd can aggravate Pitta dosha. Also, adding spices like cumin or turmeric to your eggs can help aid digestion.

It’s about experimenting with your own body’s responses. So, if you feel okay and digest the combination without discomfort, moderate intake should be fine. However, if you do notice any digestive issues, you might want to space these foods out across different meals. Always listen to your body and adjust accordingly. If you still have concerns, it could be helpful to approach a local Ayurvedic practitioner who can tailor advice to your specific constitution and lifestyle more precisely.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
