can we eat curd daily - #24521

Chloe

I am trying to figure out if we can eat curd daily, ’cause I’ve always heard it's great for digestion and overall health! My mom swears by it and has it with almost every meal. But I’m kinda confused. I’ve been having it like, every day for weeks now, and while I feel okay, sometimes I wonder if it's too much. I read somewhere that having too much dairy can lead to issues, but then there are all these articles backing the benefits of curd. I also noticed that when I eat it, my stomach feels a bit bloated sometimes, like am I just overdoing it? Plus, I have a friend who says curd is cooling for the body, which I thought was weird ’cause I don’t want to be cold on the inside, especially before my workout. Can we eat curd daily? Are there any specific signs I should watch out for? Should I mix it with something, or should I take breaks from it? Thanks, everyone!

Eating curd daily can indeed be beneficial for many, thanks to its probiotic content, which aids digestion and supports gut health. However, individual factors like your dosha constitution, current digestive state, and lifestyle can influence how well you tolerate it. Curd tends to aggravate the kapha and increase pitta slightly, while being balancing for vata.

Given that you’re experiencing bloating, it’s important to consider if curd might be increasing kapha or if there’s a lack of digestive fire (agni) to properly digest it. Overconsumption, especially coupled with kapha imbalance, can indeed lead to a heavy feeling or digestive discomfort.

Here’s a suggestion: Try having curd in moderation, maybe four to five times a week rather than every day. Opt to consume it during midday when digestive power is strongest, so it’s better assimilated. Avoid eating curd at night as it can increase mucus production and might not be digested as readily

To lessen its cooling effect, you could add spices like cumin or ginger, both of which improve digestion and mitigate coldness. Ensure it’s fresh and not sour, as sour curd can further irritate pitta and lead to stomach discomfort. Mixing the curd with a little bit of honey or a pinch of rock salt might also complement its taste and health benefits.

If bloating persists, it could be helpful to pause for a week or two and observe any changes in your symptoms. While curd has many benefits, it may not be ideal for everyone daily, especially for those with certain digestive or dosha imbalances. Ultimately, vary your intake based on how your body responds and adjust accordingly.

For your workout concern, consuming curd about an hour before exercising should typically suffice—the digestive process starts and prevents any extreme cooling effect during the physical activity. However, listen to your body, and if anything feels off, it might be worth consulting a professional for tailored advice.
