can we eat curd in morning empty stomach - #25115

Gabriella

I am really confused about something! I've always heard curd is super healthy, but I was told by a friend that we shouldn't eat curd in the morning empty stomach. I mean, is there some kind of rule about this? Last week, I had a really upset stomach and my mom suggested eating curd since it's good for digestion. But when I mentioned it was in the morning, she frowned and said it’s not the best idea! I also read online people saying can we eat curd in morning empty stomach is actually linked to allergies or... some kinda imbalance? 🤷‍♀️ I really love curd with fruits for breakfast and it seems like everyone I know eats it that way. But now I'm second-guessing myself. What do you guys think? Is there any harm in eating curd in morning empty stomach? Like, what’s the Ayurvedic perspective on this? Would love some insights! 🍽️🙏

In Ayurveda, it’s believed that consuming curd on an empty stomach in the morning isn’t the most beneficial practice for everyone. The philosophy here is all about understanding your body’s unique constitution, or ‘prakriti’, and how foods influence it. Curd, which is sour and has a heavy quality, might aggravate ‘Kapha’ and ‘Pitta’ doshas especially if one naturally has these doshas predominant in their system or is dealing with excess of them.

Eating curd first thing in the morning might lead to imbalances, particularly if your digestive fire, or ‘agni’, is not yet active. This could contribute to digestive issues like bloating or stomach upset, especially if you already had a prior episode of upset stomach as you mentioned. The sour taste of curd could also lead to increased acidity or could be mucus-forming, potentially leading to allergies or colds.

However, if curd is something you truly enjoy, try having it a bit later in the day, maybe during lunch when your digestive fire is strongest. Also, combining it with certain herbs and spices could improve its digestibility – like adding a pinch of black pepper, cumin, or even some honey, which can balance its sour nature. If you pair it with fruits, opt for those that are sweet and not overly acidic to keep the balance. But avoid having it with banana or citrus fruits, as this combination doesn’t work well according to Ayurvedic principles.

If you’re a ‘Kapha’ or ‘Pitta’ dominant individual, you might consider having buttermilk instead, as it tends to be lighter and could be more suitable for your digestion. While going through this, it’s always a good idea to observe how you’re feeling post consumption and adjust accordingly. However, if digestive troubles persist, it might be worth consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner to dive deeper into your dietary needs. Stay mindful and listen to your body’s cues, they rarely lead you astray.
