can we eat curd with bitter gourd - #25236

Isaac

I am really confused about some dietary choices lately. A few weeks ago, I read somewhere that curd is super healthy, right? But then, I heard a friend mention that eating curd with bitter gourd is a big no-no because it could mess up digestion or sumthing. I mean, I love both curd and bitter gourd! I usually make a stir-fry with bitter gourd and enjoy it with some curd on the side, but now I'm hesitating if I should even be doing it. Last week, after having those together, my stomach felt kinda off—like bloating and discomfort, maybe that was just chance but now I’m second-guessing. Can we eat curd with bitter gourd or does it really cause problems? Is there some kind of ancient wisdom in Ayurveda about this combo? Help me out before I mess up my meals even more! 🙃

Combining curd with bitter gourd can indeed be a bit of a concern from an Ayurvedic perspective. According to Ayurveda, certain food combinations can disrupt the digestive agni (fire), leading to indigestion or formation of ama, a kind of toxic residue. Curd is known to have a sour taste and is slightly heavy (guru) in nature, which can increase kapha dosha. Bitter gourd, on the other hand, has a bitter and astringent taste, and is lighter and tends to aggravate vata and pacify kapha and pitta.

The primary issue arises from the opposing nature of these two ingredients. Curd and bitter gourd have contrasting effects on doshas and can lead to digestive disturbances like bloating or discomfort when consumed together. If you experience symptoms like bloating or discomfort after eating them together — there’s a good chance they are not suiting your digestive system well.

If you wish to enjoy both, consider having them separately at different times of the day, for instance, having curd in the morning hours when the digestive fire is more potent might be better. Bitter gourd can be combined with spices like cumin, fennel, or coriander, which may aid in digestion, perhaps eaten in the evening when kapha predominant time period has passed.

To ensure a harmonious digestion and to prevent future discomfort, try observing how your body responds after consuming them separately. Also, maintaining warm water intake throughout the day helps in supporting digestive strength. If symptoms persist, it might be beneficial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to understand if there are any underlying dosha imbalances that need addressing.

Ayurveda also emphasizes the uniqueness of every individual’s constitution. A food or combination not suiting you can be perfectly fine for another, so personal experience and intuition are key to observing what works best for your digestive health.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
