is taking milk and curd together harmful - #25413

Luke

I am dealing with a bit of confusion over my diet lately, especially about dairy. I always heard that is taking milk and curd together harmful? I’m not really sure where that came from, but I tend to mix them a lot in smoothies or have them together at breakfast. My mom used to do that and, honestly, I thought it was normal until one of my friends mentioned it could cause digestive issues. Lately, I’ve been feeling bloated and a bit uneasy after meals, never thought it could be from dairy though. I went to the doc and he just said maybe it's just stress, ugh! But I’m starting to wonder if the whole milk and curd thing is what’s off. Just to be clear, I really love both! It’s just weird because I’ve read that is taking milk and curd together harmful can depend on your body type? Anyone know what the deal is? Should I change things up or keep enjoying them? Would love any thoughts!

Mixing milk and curd isn’t something that’s advised in Ayurveda, actually. According to classical texts like Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, milk and curd have different properties that affect digestion. Milk is considered sweet and cooling, taking longer to digest. Curd, on the other hand, is sour and heating with a heavier quality. Consuming them together could disturb your digestive fire, or “agni,” leading to imbalances and symptoms like bloating, gas or discomfort.

In Ayurveda, these foods should be combined with caution because each affects the doshas differently. Combining them may create ‘Ama’ - a type of digestive impurity causing bloating and unease. Given your symptoms, it makes sense to try altering your diet. Try separating milk and curd consumption for a while and see if there’s an improvement in how you feel. If having them at breakfast, maybe opt for milk one day and curd another, observing any changes in digestion or comfort.

Consider checking in on your Prakriti—your constitution—to determine what’s best suited for you. Ayurveda stresses balance, so understanding your Dosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) can guide dietary choices. Maybe your bloating is more prevalent due to imbalances needing tweaking. Also, try including spices like ginger or cinnamon to enhance digestion. Simultaneously, practice mindful eating: chew well, keep meals regular, and destress through yoga or meditation, as stress can impact agni too.

Still, if improvements seem sluggish or symptoms get worse, another consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice might be beneficial. They could offer tailored remedies or panchakarma therapies for any specific condition. Always trust your body’s signals and adjust as needed, but hopefully keeping the diary straigh’t could be the simple fix you need.
