which fruits can be eaten with curd - #25518

Audrey

I am really confused about what fruits can be eaten with curd. I've been trying to get healthy lately and I thought mixing fruits with curd would be a good idea. But every time I do, I feel like I'm not sure if this combo is actually good for me? Like, I read that bananas can go well with curd, but some say it might not be the best mix? I tried making a smoothie with strawberries and curd, and honestly, it was kinda weird. Also, my friend said apples are great, but then I noticed she adds honey too, which made me wonder if that's okay or if I'm missing something. I’ve also heard conflicting advice about berries, like are blueberries safe or will it mess up my tummy? I'm trying to keep my digestion in check. If anybody has a go-to list of which fruits can be eaten with curd or any tips on how to mix them without weird results, that would be super helpful! Thanks!

Mixing fruits with curd can be a little tricky, especially when you’re considering Ayurvedic principles. Each food has its own properties and, in Ayurveda, it’s essential to understand how these can either harmonize or create conflict in the body. Curds, or yogurt, are heavy and slightly sour, so combining them with certain fruits can sometimes imbalance your doshas, particularly Pitta and Kapha.

Let’s break it down bit. Generally, it’s suggested to avoid sour fruits with curd as both are considered slightly acidic and could potentially disturb your digestive fire or agni. This means fruits like strawberries or other tangy berries might not be the best choice. But not all hope is lost with berries - blueberries can work, though it’s wise to consume them in moderation. Especially if you’re focusing on digestion, ensure you don’t overload the body with complexity.

Bananas are commonly paired with curd in many households, but some Ayurveda experts advise caution due to their heavy and sticky nature which can be contradictory to the essence of digestion promoted by curd. If you do consume this combo, try it in the mornings so your agni has time to adjust throughout the day.

Apples are an exception! Their sweet nature makes them a decent companion for curd - but if you’re adding honey, make sure it’s a small amount. Ayurveda cautions against heating honey or combining it too heavily with random ingredients due to its own complex digestion process.

For a safe and satisfying option, consider sweet fruits like ripe mangoes or papayas. They balance well with the properties of curd. Chop them small, mix it up, and find it satisfying as a dessert or snack.

Always listen to your body’s signals. If something feels off after consuming a combination, it might not suit your prakriti or current body state. Ayurveda emphasizes mindful eating and as such, proceed with a trial and error method to recognize what combinatons work for you.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
