can we eat mushroom and curd together - #25611

Mateo

I am really confused about this whole thing with mushrooms and curd! My mom always told me that we mustn’t mix certain foods, you know, like it’ll upset our stomachs. Last week, I had this delicious mushroom curry, and I was thinking of having some yogurt with it, but then I remembered her warning. Friends say it shouldn't be a problem, but I can't shake this feeling of doubt. Weird thing is, I love both mushrooms and curd! I don't wanna ruin my meal or end up feeling sick. I've tried looking it up, but it’s all so conflicting, like, some say it’s fine while others say it’s a big no-no. And like, what’s the science behind it? Why would it be bad if we’re eating mushroom and curd together? Are there really any health implications? Planning to eat it this weekend, so I need advice! Like, can we eat mushroom and curd together or should I skip one? Help!

In Ayurveda, the food combinations we choose may significantly influence how our body digests and assimilates nutrients. This knowledge goes beyond the typical Western understanding of nutrition and delves into the synergy between different food items. When it comes to combining mushrooms and curd, let’s break it down to understand what Ayurveda suggests.

Mushrooms are earthy, nutritive, and notably heavy to digest. In Ayurvedic texts, they are considered ‘tamasik’, which means they could increase inertia and dullness if consumed excessively. On the other hand, curd, or yogurt, is classified as ‘ushna’ (heating) and is also considered heavy but with a sour taste. Curd is known to increase mucus, especially when consumed at night. The thing is, both mushrooms and curd are heavy, and their combination might overwhelm your digestive fire, or agni, especially if your digestion isn’t at its peak efficiency.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, consuming these could lead to ‘ama’ formation, which is essentially undigested food that can accumulate in the body, leading to imbalance, bloating, or other digestive issues. Each food alone may not cause such issues, but together they might not be the best for everyone.

If you have a strong digestive fire (agni), meaning you rarely experience indigestion or bloating and have regular bowel movements, you might be able to handle this combination occasionally without much issue. But, if you’re already prone to digestive issues, it’s wise to be cautious.

If you do choose to mix them, try adding spices like ginger or black pepper while cooking the mushrooms which can help in improving digestion. Keep it as a daytime meal and ensure it’s fresh, and not too cold, as cold food can dampen digestive agni more.

In the end, the choice comes down to listening to your own body. If you notice discomfort after such meals, it might be a sign to consume them separately. Ayurveda emphasizes individuality – what works for one may not work for another. Making subtle changes to improve digestion could allow you to continue enjoying your favorite foods.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
