can we eat fruits and nuts together ayurveda - #25762

Christopher

I am going through this phase where I really want to understand more about what I’m eating, especially when it comes to fruits and nuts. I've always loved snacking on almonds or walnuts with some apples or bananas, thinking it's a healthy combo. But then I stumbled upon this whole ayurveda thing and now I’m super confused lol. Can we eat fruits and nuts together ayurveda says something, but I can’t quite figure out if it's a good idea. Like, I read somewhere that mixing fruits with nuts could mess up digestion or something? I have this bloating issue after meals, and I'm starting to wonder if my beloved snacks are part of the problem. I usually have them as breakfast or a quick snack but now I feel like I've been messing up big time! Are there specific nuts or fruits that are like totally off-limits together? Can we eat fruits and nuts together ayurveda-style, or should I change things up? Really hope someone has answers because I want to eat healthy without feeling icky afterwards!

Combining fruits and nuts is quite common, but from an Ayurvedic perspective, it may require a little more consideration than you might’ve expected. According to Ayurvedic principles, each food has its own unique properties or gunas and digestive requirements. This means that certain food combinations may not be optimal, potentially leading to digestive discomfort like bloating, which you mentioned.

In general, fruits are best consumed alone, or with other similar fruits, mainly because they digest quickly. Mixing them with slower-digesting foods like nuts could indeed lead to some digestive disturbances. However, this is not strictly a no-go. Certain combinations are more easily tolerated depending on individual digestive strength or agni.

For someone with bloating issues, it’s essential to pay attention to your agni. You’re saying you have these as breakfast or a snack, which is already a great choice since during these times the digestive fire might still be quite strong. Experimenting with soaked almonds or walnuts rather than raw ones could be beneficial, as soaking makes them easier to digest.

If you notice your body struggles with certain combinations, consider having them separately with a gap of at least 30 minutes. You may find fruits like apples or bananas pair slightly better when taken alone since they’re quicker to digest in comparison to nuts.

On your journey to better digestion, keep note of any patterns or symptoms you experience, it can help identify if a certain combo isn’t working well for you. Remember staying in tune with your body and its needs is key in Ayurveda. Lastly, Ayurvedic practices often stress eating mindfully and in a calm environment to aid healthy digestion.

If after adjusting you still experience bloating consistently, seeking personalized advice from an Ayurvedic practitioner could offer more targeted solutions that align with your prakriti or individual constitution.
