what happens when we eat curd at night - #25867

Jaxon

I am really curious about what happens when we eat curd at night. I’ve always loved curd and add it to most of my meals, right? But last week, I was reading some Ayurvedic stuff and came across a few opinions saying eating curd at night is not great. I mean, my family has always had it after dinner, and no one seems to think it is bad! But then my aunt, who is super into health, started talking about how it can cause digestion issues or something like that when eaten late. I was like, whoa, really?? My mom says it helps with my gut and is cooling, but if I eat it too late at night, should I expect some digestive chaos? I usually sleep around 11, so I often have curd with roti around 8. Am I setting myself up for some sleepless nights or tummy troubles, or is that just a myth? What happens when we eat curd at night? Are there specific timeframes or rules to follow? I just want to clear this up!

When it comes to eating curd at night, there’s indeed a bit of buzz in Ayurvedic circles about it. Ayurveda often advises caution with curd consumption at night because, according to classical texts, it can increase kapha dosha and tamas guna, leading to potential issues like mucus formation, congestion or impaired digestion. But this isn’t a hard and fast rule for everyone. Some constitutions might handle curd better than others.

Curd has beneficial probiotics that help in digestion and is cooling in nature, but at night, especially if consumed in larger quantities or for those with kapha imbalances, it might aggravate the dosha. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to avoid it completely in the evening. For someone who sleeps around 11, having curd with your dinner at 8 may not necessarily lead to “digestive chaos”, considering that digestion is typically strongest at midday.

If you’ve had no issues and your prakriti (constitution) supports it, you might continue as is. However, if you notice mucus, indigestion, or stuffiness particularly in the mornings, it may be wise to reconsider night-time curd or adjust the portion size. Another tip is to have it in a warmer form, like mixing it with ginger or having it churned with buttermilk, which can help with digestion.

Also, make sure the curd is fresh and not sour, as sour curd can be heavier to digest. It would be practical to observe how your body responds. Are there any signs of increased mucus or kapha-related symptoms? If yes, consider moderating or shifting your curd consumption to earlier in the day.

So, it might not be that a bowl of curd at 8 will keep you up at night. But observing your body’s response is key, as Ayurveda is all about balance and noticing individual differences. Adjusting based on your own needs will help you enjoy your curd without concern for potential digestive issues.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
