does eating curd with sugar increase weight - #40685

Christian

I am really confused about something and hoping to get some insight from you all! I love eating curd, like seriously can’t get enough of it, especially with sugar. But I recently heard from a friend that maybe eating curd with sugar increase weight or something like that? Now I’m totally second-guessing myself. I’ve been trying to lose a few pounds for a while now, and I usually have curd in my breakfast every day. I put a bit of sugar in it for taste, but what if I'm just sabotaging my progress? Just last week, I noticed that my tummy feels a little bigger, which might just be bloating or something, but I can’t help but wonder if the curd with sugar is the culprit. I did a little Googling, and there are all these conflicting stories about how dairy affects weight gain, and then there's this whole sugar debate too! Ughhh, it's overwhelming. Does eating curd with sugar really increase weight, or is it just a myth? Should I cut the sugar out entirely, or would that make curd less enjoyable? Help!

Eating curd with sugar can potentially contribute to weight gain, though it depends on several factors that need consideration, according to ayurvedic principles. In Ayurveda, curd is considered beneficial when consumed in moderation due to its properties that help improve digestive fire (agni) and nourish the dhatus (tissues). However, adding sugar, particularly in excess, can lead to an increase in Kapha dosha, which is associated with tendencies toward weight gain and lethargy.

Curd itself is heavy and, when combined with sugar, can sometimes create an ama-like condition, or toxic build-up, especially if your digestive fire is not strong, leading to bloating or heaviness. This doesn’t mean curd and sugar are inherently “bad,” but consistent intake, particularly in a cold or heavy form, may slow digestion for some, especially if you have a Kapha-pitta-prakriti.

If you are trying to lose weight, consider these changes. Try curd without sugar and instead add a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom, which balances the Kapha and adds a warming quality. If you must add sweetness, a small amount of honey may be more suitable, but only in moderation as honey is also heating and its properties are different from sugar, therefore might not blunt your progress as much as sugar does.

It’s also worthwhile to have your main portion of curd earlier in the day, avoiding consumption in the evening, as it might contribute to overnight sluggishness. Your awareness of portion control is key too; even beneficial food can be detrimental if overeaten. Incorporate these slight adjustments and observe how your body responds. And remember—diet is just one part, staying active and managing stress are essential in supporting any weight loss journey.
