does increase in testosterone increase height - #38606

I am kinda confused about something and I really hope someone can help me out. I’ve been researching a bit about hormones because I’m a 17-year-old and still waiting for a growth spurt, honestly. My friends are all taller than me, and I feel like I’m stuck at this height which is kinda annoying. I came across this idea that an increase in testosterone could somehow help with height, you know? Like, does increase in testosterone increase height or is that just some myth? Last month, I got my hormone levels checked and my testosterone was on the lower side—but still normal, according to the doc. I’ve started lifting weights and thinking maybe that would help boost levels naturally. But I’ve also read that all the height growth happens mostly before 18. Like, is there really a chance for me to grow taller if my testosterone increases now, or should I just accept what I got? I feel like it’s a touchy subject because it's also tied to self-esteem and all that jazz. Should I be looking into supplements or just focusing on getting stronger? I mean, just really curious if a boost in testosterone could actually, you know, do anything about my height situation. Thanks for any thoughts, anyone!

An increase in testosterone isn’t directly tied to growing taller, but it does play a role in the growth process. During puberty, testosterone contributes to the growth spurts in boys, by converting to estradiol, which contributes to the lengthening of bones. However, there’s a crucial timing aspect to this. Most of the height growth during the teenage years happens due to the closure of the growth plates at the ends of long bones, guided by hormones, particularly estrogen (which is derived from testosterone in males). Once these growth plates close, which happens for most people between 16 to 18 years of age, further increase in height is unlikely.

Since you’re 17, it’s possible you’re nearing the end of the growth window, but not necessarily for sure. In Ayurveda, support for growth at this stage can focus on overall wellness, maintaining balance among the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), supporting Agni (digestive fire), and nourishing the dhatus (tissues). Natural ways to support your hormone balance include ensuring adequate nutrition, which is pivotal. Foods like almonds, walnuts, ghee, dairy, and fresh vegetables can nourish your body and promote the production of healthy tissues.

Lifting weights, done in moderation, can aid your body in promoting overall health and possibly boosting testosterone slightly, but its impact on height will likely be limited. Prioritize getting enough rest, avoid excessive stress, and maintain a regular eating schedule. Sleep is especially crucial, as growth hormone secretion peaks during deep sleep, aiding in potential growth if your body is ready for it.

Supplements should be handled cautiously, especially at your age, as they may disrupt the natural balance within your body. Focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, and possibly yoga or stretching, which can improve posture and ensure you’re maintaining your natural height potential. Remember, each person grows differently, and it’s important to maintain focus on overall health and self-acceptance as defining aspects, beyond just height.

Testosterone does play a role in growth and development during puberty, including height increase, but the relationship is not direct or simple. Higher levels of testosterone can stimulate growth plates in the bones to some extent, but these plates close after puberty, which typically occurs around age 18-21. So, any significant increase in height from testosterone would usually happen earlier in puberty when the growth plates are still open.

In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, your individual prakriti or body constitution is key to understanding your unique growth patterns. Your current height is also influenced by factors like genetics, diet, and overall health (including your dosha balance). Instead of focusing solely on testosterone, consider concentrating on maintaining a balanced diet enriched with nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and proteins, which support bone health. In Ayurveda, balance of agni, or digestive fire, is considered critical too, so ensuring your digestion is strong can aid nutrient absorption.

Focus on exercises that improve overall health and wellbeing rather than only weightlifting. Activities like yoga and stretching can help improve posture and flexibility, which may make you appear taller.

If you’re exploring natural ways to support balanced hormone levels, certain Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha may help manage stress and support bodily functions, including potential effects on hormone balance. Nevertheless, any use of supplements should be discussed with a healthcare provider, particularly since you’re still in a crucial stage of growth.

Aim for good sleep, as it can influence growth hormone production, giving your body the foundation it needs to reach its maximum potential height. If symptoms persist or you feel this is affecting your self-esteem, consider seeking advice from a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive view on this matter.
