HELLO,

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland in the neck. It makes two important hormones -T3=active hormone that controls how fast cells work -T4= inactive hormone that converts into T3 when needed

These hormones regulate metabolism , growth , energy , mood and even digestion

When the gland becomes underactive, it proceeds less T3.T4. The brain senses this and releases more TSH to push the gland to work harder

In Ayurveda, thyroid imbalance is understood mainly as -Agnimandya= weak digestive/metabolic fire -Kapha vata imbalance= sluggishness and hormonal irregularity -AMA(toxin accumulation)- due to incomplete metabolism at cellular level

So the problem is not only in the gland- it is In the whole body’s metabolism

TREATMENT GOALS -rekindle metabolic fire- improve digestion and tissue metabolism -balance kapha and vata doshas -remove ama (toxins) -support the thyroid gland naturally while maintaining hormone stability -rebuild strength and immunity- for long term healing

INTERNAL MEDICATIONS

1) KANCHANAR GUGGULU= 1 tab twice daily after meals with warm water for 3 months = clears glandular, congestion, balances thyroid hormones, improves metabolism

5) SANKHAPUSHPI SYRUP =1 tsp twice daily =enhances focus, reduces mental dullness and anxiety

5) AMALAKI RASAYANA= 1/2 tsp daily in morning =anitoxidant, improve tissue repair, supports immunity

EXTERNAL THERAPIES

1) OIL MASSAGE= warm sesame oil full body massage =improves blood circulation, reduces stiffess and fatigue

2) NASYA= instill 2 drops of Anu taila In each nostril daily mroning = clears kapha, supports pitutary thyroid connection

3) Holding sesame oil in mouth for 5 min = enhances metabolism and oral detox

LIFESTYLE -early rising before 7 am- helps maintain circadian rhythm -sun exposure= 30 min of morning sunlight daily -regular exercise= walking, skipping, light jogging, swimming, or cycling -avoid day sleep it increases kapha -adequate sleep 8-9 hrs at night- avoid screens before bedtime -stress management= play music art and mindfullness are very beneficial

DIET -warm, freshly cooked meals- easy to digest -whole grains= red rice, millets, oats, barley -vegetables= bottle gourd, ridge gourd, drumstick, pumpkin, spinach cooked -fruits= pomegranate, apple, papaya, guava, citrus fruits -spices= turmeric, cumin, black pepper, feugreek, cinnamon and ginger -good fats= cow ghee, sesmeoil -natural sweetners= honey in small amount, dates

AVOID -raw or refrigerated foods, cold drinks, ice cream -refined flour, sugar , junk and processed foods -deep fired foods and excess dairy curd, panner -goitrogenic foods like raw cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and soy products

YOGA ASANAS -sarvangasana = stimulates thyroid directly -matsyasana = massage neck region -bhujangasana= strengthens spine and glands -halasana= improves hormonal regulation -suryanamaskar= boosts metabolism

PRANAYAM -Anulom vilom= Balances Vata and. kapha -bhastrika= activate thyroid and improve oxygenation -ujjayi= stimulates thyroid through gentle neck pressure -bhramari= calms the nervous system

Continue thyronorm as advised by your endocrinologist . Ayurveda supports not replaces it -never abruptly stop or adjust the dose yourself -Ayurveda therapy aims to make the thyroid self-sufficient over time not dependent

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

DR. MAITRI ACHARYA

Hello I understand your concern about your 13-year-old son’s thyroid issue. Thyroid imbalance in children, especially when they have been on medication like Thyronorm (50 mcg) for a long time, needs a delicate and holistic approach. So dont worry we are here to help you out😊

✅AYURVEDIC PLAN OF TREATMENT

✅INTERNAL MEDICATION

1. Kanchanar Guggulu 1 tablet twice daily after food with warm water. (Balances thyroid function, reduces glandular swelling, clears metabolic toxins.)

2. Hamsapadadi kashyam 10ml-0-10ml with equal water after food( helps to stimulate thyroid gland)

⚠️ Note: Do not stop or alter Thyronorm dosage abruptly. L

✅DIET MODIFICATION

✅Include

Warm, freshly cooked meals with light spices like cumin, ajwain, black pepper, ginger. Millets (ragi, bajra, jowar) instead of excess wheat and rice. Green leafy vegetables (except cabbage and spinach in excess). Fruits: papaya, pomegranate, guava, apple. Herbal teas: ginger-tulsi tea, jeera-ajwain water. Use cow ghee moderately for nourishment.

❌Avoid

Cold, refrigerated, or leftover foods. Deep-fried, oily, or very sweet foods (cakes, biscuits, sweets). Goitrogenic foods in excess — cabbage, cauliflower, soya, broccoli. Milk and curd together or curd at night. Excessive screen time or sleeping right after meals.

✅LIFESTYLE AND YOGA

Daily Routine Encourage regular waking time, warm bath, and balanced meals on time. Ensure he gets 7–8 hours of sleep.

✅HONE REMEDIES

1. Jeera–Ajwain–Saunf Water: Boil 1 tsp each in 4 cups water → reduce to 2 cups → sip warm throughout the day. ( Improves metabolism and reduces Kapha.)

2. Morning Honey–Lemon Water: In warm water with a pinch of cinnamon — helps in fat metabolism.

3. 2 Dates and 5 Almonds soaked overnight – for morning nourishment and strength.

4. Warm cow’s milk with turmeric at bedtime – for immunity and glandular balance.

Monitoring and Follow-Up

Continue Thyronorm as prescribed and repeat T3, T4, and TSH tests every 3–4 months.

With consistent Ayurvedic support and proper nutrition, the dependency on higher Thyronorm doses can often reduce over time.

Wishing your son a good health😊

Warm regards, Dr Snehal Vidhate

Understanding the scenario with your son’s thyroid condition, integrating Ayurveda might aid in managing the balance of T3 and T4 hormones alongside any prescribed medication. Firstly, diet plays a crucial role. Encourage him to consume a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes. Foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, and peanuts, which can interfere with thyroid function when consumed in large amounts, should be moderated.

Ayurvedic herbs such as Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) can be explored as they are believed to support thyroid function due to their adaptogenic properties. It’s usually taken in powder or capsule form, about 300 mg per day, but check with a professional before starting any herbs. Sesame oil massage (Abhyanga) might also support thyroid health by improving circulation and balancing the doshas.

For lifestyle, encouraging regular physical activity is essential such as yoga, simple exercises which strengthen and stimulate the thyroid gland function — poses like Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) can be beneficial if he is comfortable and they are safe to practice. Pranayama practices like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) might also help in maintaining hormonal balance.

Ensuring adequate sleep, managing stress, and reducing exposure to environmental toxins can aid overall health. However, it is imperative to closely monitor and regularly consult with your healthcare provider before initiating changes in his treatment plan, ensuring his current medications continue to work effectively without interruption or adverse effects.

Your son’s condition with thyroid imbalance, particularly relating to T3 and T4 levels, requires careful attention. While he’s on Thyronorm, a synthetic hormone treatment, integrating certain Siddha-Ayurvedic practices might aid in supporting his overall health. First, ensure he’s following a balanced diet that supports kapha balance and does not aggravate vata. Prioritize cooked vegetables like carrots, zucchini, and leafy greens — cooked with minimal spices to aid in digestion. Include foods rich in iodine like seaweed or iodized salt in cautious amounts to naturally support thyroid function.

Herbal support may include guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), known for their properties to moderate stress and aid glandular function. Consult with a Siddha practitioner for specific formulation and dosing suitable for a child. Encourage him to practice deep breathing exercises or gentle yoga to support his nadis and reduce stress, which can indirectly affect thyroid hormones. Regular pranayama, like Nadi Shodhana, can be beneficial here.

Always maintain regular checkups with his healthcare provider to monitor thyroid levels and medication efficacy. It’s critical to not adjust or stop the Thyronorm dose without discussing with his doctor, as improper hormone regulation can have significant health impact. Avoid anything more aggressive without professional guidance, as children’s hormonal systems are still developing and need tailored care.
