Concerns About Low Pulse Rate While on Ayurvedic Blood Pressure Medications - #43510

Client_12236f

Hello! This is the second time I've experienced my pulse dropping below 60 beats per minute while taking Ayurvedic blood pressure medications, sometimes as low as 52-54 beats per minute, and staying there for a long time. The first time was during a course of Serpina in late winter-early spring 2024, and the bradycardia persisted for two weeks afterward. Recently, my blood pressure spiked to 150. I took two Mukta Vati Extra Power tablets. My blood pressure returned to normal, but five days later, I'm experiencing bradycardia again. I usually have a high pulse rate and occasionally have episodes of tachycardia. I haven't taken blood pressure medications for over a year, and I haven't had a low pulse. Could you please tell me if this is a normal symptom when taking such medications? Does this mean they're not suitable for me and I shouldn't take them if my blood pressure rises again? If so, what can I try instead?

Ayurvedic medications like Serpina and Mukta Vati are often used to manage blood pressure, and they can have calming effects on the cardiovascular system, it is not common for them to lower your pulse significantly, especially if you naturally have a high pulse rate or episodes of tachycardia. Bradycardia, defined as a slower than normal heart rate, can indeed be concerning if it is symptomatic or persists for extended periods. While slight lowering of pulse rate might be an expected effect due to the calming herbal actions, experiencing such a significant drop needs to be carefully monitored.

This may suggest that your system is highly sensitive to these herbs or that your current health state doesn’t fully sync with their current usage. Factors like your current dosha imbalance — if your vata is elevated, causing an erratic or speedy pulse when balanced by calming herbs, can lead to over correction like bradycardia. Besides, heart rate variations can result from other things like stress, hydration level, or changes in routine or diet.

I would recommend discontinuing the Mukta Vati and any similar medication temporarily to observe if your pulse returns to baseline. Monitor your heart rate and watch out for any signs of dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath, as these might require prompt medical attention. As a general precaution, discuss any such symptoms with a healthcare provider to exclude any underlying cardiac issues.

For managing high blood pressure without affecting pulse drastically, focus on lifestyle modifications. Incorporating meditation, pranayama, and gentle yoga exercises helps balance the autonomic nervous system. Ensure a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and hydration — reducing salt and caffeine intake can also help prevent blood pressure spikes.

If another medication is required, consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner for tailored formulation might be ideal. They will consider your unique prakriti, present symptoms, and lifestyle to choose herbs that are more suited to your current condition without undesired effects.
