Seeking Ayurvedic Treatments for Cardiac Restenosis - #45304

I experienced a cardiac arrest in October 2023, during which the doctor performed a PCI on my left anterior descending artery (LAD). My left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is currently 45%. Recently, my doctor conducted an echocardiogram and angiography, which revealed that my LAD has developed restenosis and is now 100% blocked again despite the previous stenting. Fortunately, my LVEF remains at 45%, and some collateral arteries have opened. My question is whether there are any Ayurvedic treatments for this condition. The doctor has informed me that the only possible treatment is CABG, but I would prefer not to undergo that procedure. Additionally, I am feeling quite anxious. Can I take Arjun tablets for my condition? Please advise me. Thank you, Vijay Raval

Restenosis after a PCI procedure is indeed a challenging situation. Ayurveda offers some supportive therapies that could potentially complement your medical treatment. While Ayurveda can be supportive, it’s important to prioritize your cardiologist’s advice, especially when surgical interventions like CABG are recommended.

Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) is indeed renowned in Ayurveda for cardiac support. Taking Arjuna tablets can be beneficial as it is thought to improve heart function and support overall cardiac health. However, it’s crucial to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who is in coordination with your cardiologist before starting it, especially considering your condition. A typical dosage might be 500 mg twice daily, but this should be individualized.

Diet-wise, consider emphasizing a heart-healthy diet. Incorporate more fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains into your meals, avoiding saturated fats, trans fats, and excessive salt. Cook with heart-friendly oils like sesame or olive oil, which may support heart health.

Lifestyle adjustments can also contribute. Gentle activities, such as yoga or meditation, can help manage your anxiety levels and promote circulation. Engage in breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom or Brahmari pranayama, which are traditionally believed to calm the mind and alleviate stress, supporting heart health. If stress persists, consider including Shankhapushpi and Brahmi for mental calmness.

Regular check-ups with your cardiologist are essential to ensure your condition is monitored closely. While Ayurveda can support heart health, medical guidance must be your priority. Keep an open line with health professionals to ensure complementary therapies don’t conflict with necessary medical treatments.

Given the severity of restenosis, with your LAD now completely blocked, it’s crucial to follow your doctor’s recommendation for CABG. Restenosis can present significant risks if not surgically addressed, and Ayurvedic treatments should not replace urgent or life-saving interventions like CABG. By not addressing this surgically, your risk for another cardiac event remains and you should not delay in seeking the appropriate medical intervention.

However, Ayurveda can complement your ongoing care post-surgery by addressing cardiac health, supporting mental calmness, and improving overall resilience. Arjuna, known for its heart-supportive properties, can be helpful, but should be taken only after consulting your cardiologist to ensure it doesn’t interfere with your prescribed medications.

Address anxiety through regular practices like Pranayama, acranartha yoga poses that promote calmness. Small breathing exercises or meditation can be integrated into daily life to help reduce stress. Following a heart-healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding excessive salt, and engaging in gentle physical activity as advised by your physician can further contribute to recovery.

Please prioritize your immediate health needs by proceeding with advised surgical treatments. Ayurveda can play a valuable role post-procedure in supporting your body’s natural healing processes. Always work closely with your healthcare provider to ensure that any complementary practices align with your medical care plan and personal health condition.
