How to treat ongoing lower back pain that started after long hours on a laptop? - #52678
Hello doctor, I wanted to ask about my ongoing back pain that has been bothering me for quite some time now. It started a few months ago, maybe around late November, after I spent long hours working on my laptop without proper posture. Since then, this back pain keeps coming and going, but recently it feels more constant and uncomfortable. The back pain is mostly in my lower back, sometimes spreading slightly to the sides, especially after sitting for long periods or when I wake up in the morning. I did try some basic things like stretching exercises and using over-the-counter pain relief creams, and for a short time the back pain reduced, but then it returned again. I even visited a general doctor in January, and they suggested muscle strain and advised rest and physiotherapy. I followed it for a couple of weeks, but the back pain never fully went away. Some days it feels dull, but on other days it becomes sharp, especially when bending or lifting something. Now I am a bit confused and honestly tired of this back pain situation. Someone suggested that Ayurveda might help treat back pain from the root cause rather than just giving temporary relief. That is why I wanted to ask if this kind of back pain could be related to imbalance in doshas, maybe Vata, and whether Ayurvedic treatment can actually help reduce or cure this back pain. Also, could you please guide what kind of Ayurvedic therapies, oils, or internal medicines are usually recommended for back pain like this? And are there any lifestyle or dietary changes I should follow to avoid worsening this back pain? Thank you.

Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.
I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.
Your ongoing lower back pain, particularly after long hours of sitting and improper posture, can be linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Vata is associated with movement and dryness, and when it becomes aggravated, it can lead to symptoms like pain, irregularity, and stiffness. The fact that your pain varies from dull to sharp, worsens after sitting, and is more noticeable in the morning aligns with Vata’s tendency to cause variability and discomfort in the musculoskeletal system.
The systemic pattern here involves Vata’s aggravation leading to dryness and stiffness in the muscles and joints, compounded by prolonged sitting and lack of movement. This can also affect your digestion and energy levels, as Vata imbalance often disrupts these functions, potentially leading to fatigue and digestive irregularities.
To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.
Please answer each question as clearly as possible:
1. How long have you been experiencing this back pain? Please specify if it’s been consistent or if there have been periods of relief. 2. How would you describe the intensity of your back pain on most days? Is it mild, moderate, or severe, and does it change with specific activities? 3. What activities seem to worsen your back pain the most? For example, is it sitting for long periods, bending, or waking up in the morning? 4. Have you noticed any patterns with your pain, such as it being worse in the morning or after sitting for a long time? 5. What treatments have you tried so far, and how effective have they been in providing relief? 6. How would you rate your overall energy levels throughout the day? Do you feel energetic, moderately fatigued, or often tired? 7. How is your digestive health? Do you experience bloating, gas, indigestion, or any chronic issues like constipation or diarrhea?
Your detailed responses will help in creating a tailored Ayurvedic treatment plan that may include therapies, oils, and lifestyle adjustments to address the root cause of your back pain.
