Should We Choose Surgery or Ayurvedic Treatment for My Mother's Knee Pain? - #37009
My mother is 65 years old. Recently, she started experiencing pain in both her knees. We consulted a doctor and did an X-ray. The X-ray report shows: 1) Joint Space markedly reduced in medial compartments of both knees. 2) Osteophyte formation seen along articular margins. 3) Subchondral sclerosis and early cystic changes noted. 4) No facture or dislocation seen. 5) Patellofemoral joint space also shows narrowing. 6) Soft tissues appear unremarkable. After examining the report, the doctor suggested knee replacement surgery, but only for one knee — the one where the cartilage is majorly damaged. However, some people are saying that through treatments like Research Ayu therapy or Ayurvedic regenerative treatments, cartilage can naturally regenerate and surgery can be avoided. We are a bit confused between these two paths — whether to go for knee replacement surgery or try Ayurvedic / regenerative cartilage treatment first. Please guide us on which line of treatment would be most appropriate.

Instead of going directly for surgery first try with medicines , there are many cases where we have avoided surgery but still if no improvement and it’s disturbing her daily routine then you can opt for surgery
Thank you

In assessing your mother’s situation, there are a few key considerations both from a modern and Ayurvedic perspect, keeping in mind her age, conditions, and lifestyle. Osteoarthritis, which likely is what she is experiencing, stems from a Vata imbalance in Ayurveda – especially when it involves degeneration and dryness.
Ayurvedic Treatment Suggestions:
1. Diet and Nutrition: A warm, nourishing diet can help balance Vata. Include foods like cooked vegetables, whole grains like wheat and rice, and incorporate oils such as sesame oil or ghee in cooking. Reduce intake of cold, dry, and processed foods. Turmeric and ashwagandha can support joint health; adding a teaspoon of turmeric in 'warm milk can relieve inflammation.
2. Herbal Treatment: Ayurvedic classics like Ashwagandha, Guggulu, and Shallaki are beneficial in managing arthritis. UZing Yogaraj Guggulu as a supplement can support joint health. However, consult with a local Ayurvedic practitioner for precise dosha alignment and herbs, dosages.
3. Panchakarma: Consider a course of Panchakarma but done under well experienced professional. Procedures like ‘Basti’ (medicated enema) and ‘Abhyanga’ (oil massage) might help improve lubrication and function. A warm sesame oil mixed with herbs is ideal for massages on the affected area.
4. Exercise & Lifestyle: Encourages gentle exercises like swimming or yoga which improve flexibilty without straining. Stress management is crucial; practices like meditation or pranayama daily could be beneficial, balancing mental and physical.
Surgical Intervention:
Given the degenerative changes shown in imaging, evaluating the benefits of surgery against its risks and recovery time is essential. Ayurvedic treatment can take time to show significant results and may provide relief from symptoms rather than complete cure. If pain is acute and affecting her quality of life severely, it might be pragmatic to consider surgical option for the severely affected knee.
Ultimately, it’s worth consulting with a qualified ayurvedic physician and orthopedic to align their inputs. Initial conservative approach can be tried for a few months, provided there’s no risk of deterioration. If opting for surgery, post-operative Ayurvedic treatments might fasten recovery and maintain joint health on a long-term basis.
