Doctors’ responses

An 8mm hole in the heart, known as an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), is a serious medical condition that often requires careful evaluation and management by a cardiologist. In modern medicine, ASDs can sometimes close on their own over time, especially smaller ones., but larger defects like 8mm may need surgical or interventional correction to prevent complications later in life. Therefore, it is crucial that your daughter has regular check-ups with her cardiologist to monitor the situation. From an ayurvedic perspective, we can focus on supporting her overall growth and wellness, while enhancing her natural energy and vitality. In Ayurveda, it's important to support the heart function, balance her doshas particularly Vata dosha which might be causing poor growth, and enhancing digestion or agni. But, keep in mind, these are supportive measures & can't replace conventional treatment. Firstly, dietary adjustments can help boost her nourishment. Include easily digestible, warm and nourishing foods like rice, moong dal (lentils), ghee, and cooked vegetables in her diet. Avoid very cold, dry, or raw foods as they may hinder digestion. You can also prepare a light khichdi (rice-lentil preparation) which is known for being easy on digestion and nutritious. In addition, focus on foods that would balance Vata, like sweet potatoes, well-cooked oats, and warming spices like ginger and cumin. Consider including Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha, traditionally known for promoting strength and energy. However, consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any herbs to ensure they are appropriate for her, given her condition. Since she has trouble eating quickly, try smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day rather than large meals. Eating this way can help her take in nutrients more effectively without overwhelming her temporarily weak digestion. For lifestyle, gentle activities and yoga specifically designed for children, like simple breathing exercises, can improve overall vitality and circulation without being too strenuous. Activities should always be done under supervision and within her comfort level. Remember, these recommendations aim to enhance her general health and vitality but are not a substitute for medical evaluation or treatment for ASD. Regular follow-ups with her pediatric cardiologist is essential in managing her condition safely and effectively.
