can we eat curd and pickle together - #25131

Mateo

I am really confused about something that’s been driving me crazy lately. I've always loved eating curd, especially during the summer! But then I got this weird idea in my head about whether or not can we eat curd and pickle together? I've seen my family do it many times, and it always felt normal but then I read somewhere that combining them can be bad for digestion? Like, what if it creates acidity or something, which gives me concerns since I’ve been dealing with bloating issues, especially after meals. Last week at a family gathering, my aunty made this super spicy pickle and I mixed it with my curd because, honestly, it tastes amazing together. Yet, later that evening I had this awful feeling in my tummy. Was it the pickle, the curd, or the combo? I just can't figure it out! My friends are saying it's totally fine but what do the doctors think? Can we eat curd and pickle together or should I cut one out of my meals to avoid this issue? Help, please!

The idea of combining curd and pickle is a common one, but it's important to understand how these foods interact according to Ayurvedic principles. In Ayurveda, the balance of doshas, digestive fire (agni), and overall constitution are crucial. Curd, known for its sour and cooling properties, can balance Vata dosha but in excess, it could aggravate Kapha and Pitta doshas. Pickles are also sour, often spicy and fermented, and they can increase Pitta and sometimes Kapha, due to salt content and oils. Together, these can be too heating for the digestive system, potentially disrupting the agni, especially for those with Pitta imbalances. This might be what's contributing to your bloating and discomfort. If you're experiencing bloating regularly, it would be advisable to observe if these symptoms consistently appear after eating this combo. You could try eliminating one food at a time to see if your symptoms improve. Given your summer reference, you're probably leaning into cooling foods like curd. Consider milder versions of pickle or use them in moderation. Here's something you can try: instead of spicy pickle, choose milder one, like non-spicy lime or mango pickles. Ensure that the pickle is made traditionally without excessive preservatives or additives. Observe the timing; consuming pickles and curd at different meals can give your digestion a break. Hydration also plays a key role. Drinking lukewarm water with meals can aid digestion. Try incorporating digestive spices like cumin, coriander, and ginger into your meals—they might help to alleviate the bloating and improve agni. Each person has a unique prakriti, so tailor your approach based on how your body responds. Seek personal consultation with a healthcare professional if you notice continued discomfort, as they could help crafting a tailored diet plan.
