Doctors' responses

Graves’ disease requires careful management, especially given the symptoms you’re describing. From an Ayurvedic perspective, there seems to be an aggravation of the Pitta and Vata doshas, along with an imbalance in Kapha due to swelling and bloating. Here’s a holistic approach that can be seamlessly integrated into your routine:

1. Dietary Adjustments: Incorporate cooling and calming foods to help balance the Pitta dosha. Favor meals that are sweet, bitter, and astringent in taste while avoiding spicy, acidic, and hot foods like peppers, tomatoes, and fermented items. Cook with herbs and spices such as coriander, turmeric, and cilantro for their soothing properties. Ensure meals are regular and at the same time each day to stabilize Vata.

2. Herbal Remedies: Consider taking Ashwagandha for its adaptogenic properties, which may help ease anxiety and balance thyroid function—1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder mixed with warm milk before bedtime can be beneficial. Also, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) can support immunity and help with thyroid imbalances. Consult a local Ayurvedic practitioner for tailored dosages.

3. Lifestyle Modifications: Ensure adequate rest and establish a calming bedtime routine to manage insomnia. Daily Abhyanga (self-massage) with warm, sesame oil can offer grounding benefits, alleviate anxiety and improve circulation. Incorporate Pranayama or deep breathing exercises — do this in the morning or evening, sitting calmly to ease respiratory distress and palpitations.

4. Exercise and Rest: Gentle exercises like walking at a comfortable pace or calming yoga poses can help maintain fitness without over-exhausting oneself. Balasana (Child’s Pose) and Shavasana (Corpse Pose) can deeply relax the nervous system.

5. Eye Care: For proptosis, applying a soothing aloe vera gel externally on closed eyelids followed by a few minutes of rest, can help reduce inflammation. Ensure this doesn’t contact your eyes.

Prioritize reaching out to an endocrinologist simultaneously, as managing Graves’ Disease often benefits from conventional medical oversight due to its complex nature. Rapid action may be necessary if symptoms worsen or new severe symptoms appear. Balancing the body’s healing dynamics through an integrated Ayurveda and allopathic approach can often bring timely relief and better health.Support throughout, ensures monitoring of Thyroid function and medication adjustment where needed.
