Considering your struggle with osteoarthritis for over a decade and the severity of your knee pain, it’s important to be cautious and well-informed. While surgery is a common recommendation from conventional medicine for such chronic and debilitating pain, Ayurveda offers some approaches that may bring relief and possibly delay the need for such a drastic step. However, always ensure that these remedies align with your doctor’s advice, especially when considering surgery.

In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is often linked with Vata dosha imbalances, causing dhatu deterioration, specifically asthi (bones). Enhancing joint health involves pacifying Vata and nourishing the tissue. You might begin by incorporating foods like warm soups, stews, and syrups that are moist, oily, and easy on digestion.

Guggulu formulations such as Yogaraj Guggulu can be helpful due to their anti-inflammatory properties. They should be taken as prescribed by a qualified practitioner. Ashwagandha and Shatavari are also beneficial in rebuilding strength and immunity, working from within to support your body’s natural structure.

For the itchiness, which might be a Pitta imbalance, applying a paste of neem powder with water can soothe the skin. Consuming 1 to 2 teaspoons of Triphala powder at night, mixed with warm water, may improve digestion and detoxify the body, potentially alleviating the itch.

Taking care of your joint pain requires a holistic approach. Regularly gentle oil massage, or ‘abhyanga,’ with warm sesame or Mahanarayan oil, focusing on the knees, can improve circulation and reduce stiffness. Adding a few drops of Turmeric oil for its anti-inflammatory effects can help too!

Exercises like yoga and tai chi are excellent for maintaining joint mobility. Kati Chakrasana while ensuring not to strain the knees, is particularly helpful but consult a teacher to adapt poses to your abilities.

Regular checks with your doctor are essential. If your pain continues or worsens, reviewing your surgical options might be necessary. Ayurveda can complement your current treatment plan but should never replace a medical advice, especially when surgery is on the table.
