How can fennel seeds help during lactation and what should I expect? - #22056

Logan

I am really trying to figure out what's the best way to increase my milk supply since I just had a baby a few weeks ago. I’ve heard sooo much about fennel seeds lactation and how they can help, but I’m not quite sure how it all works. So, I’ve been eating these fennel seeds, like, every day hoping they will boost my supply but sometimes I feel like I'm just eating them for nothing ya know? I read somewhere that they can contain compounds that mimic estrogen or something? Which sounds cool but how does that really help with lactation? Also, I’ve noticed that my little one seems a little gassy lately, like, could it be something to do with the fennel seeds lactation stuff? I guess I’m just a bit confused and want what's best for my baby and myself. Am I doing it right? How much should I be consuming? I’m also kinda worried if there are any side effects I should be aware of? Like, is it safe to just munch on them endlessly? I just wanna hear from some other moms or Ayurvedic experts, I mean if fennel seeds are good for lactation, why is everyone raving about them? So anyone here who can shed some light on” this?

Fennel seeds have indeed been revered in Ayurveda for their galactagogue properties—means they can help increase milk production. The seeds contain phytoestrogens, which are plant compounds that can mimic estrogen in your body, and this hormonal balance can assist lactation. Phytoestrogens enhance the prolactin levels, a hormone directly tied to milk production. So eating fennel seeds can definitely be beneficial, but moderation is key.

For practical use, you can consume 1 to 2 teaspoons of fennel seeds daily. These can be taken in different ways—chewing them directly after meals helps with digestion, or you could steep them in hot water to make a soothing fennel tea. If you prefer, grind them into a powder and add them to your food. They can ease digestion for you, too, which is often helpful post-pregnancy.

About your concern regarding your little one feeling gassy, it’s a bit unusual that fennel seeds might cause it. Fennel seeds are typically known to help reduce gas and discomfort. Still, every baby can react differently, especially in those first weeks. Monitoring your baby’s response is crucial. If gassiness continues, please consult with a pediatrician.

As for safety, fennel seeds are generally safe in moderate amounts. Be cautious not to overconsume. Large quantities could potentially disrupt digestive processes due to excessive phytoestrogen intake. For lactating mothers in particular, a balanced diet primarily focused on hydration, nutrient-dense meals, and proper rest is crucial.

If you’re in doubt or if specific symptoms persist in either you or your baby, it’s wise to consult your healthcare provider. An integrated approach with your pediatrician and Ayurvedic expert can ensure the best path forward for you and your baby. Always prioritize safety and attentiveness to your and your baby’s health over popular remedies.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
