Doctors' responses

I’m really sorry to hear about your dad’s Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). Since doctors have suggested a lung transplant or lifelong oxygen support, it means his condition is advanced, Ayurveda cannot reverse lung fibrosis, but it can help improve breathing, slow down further lung damage, and boost overall strength. Some people have seen improvements in oxygen levels and better quality of life with Ayurvedic & natural treatments.

Understanding Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) through the lens of Ayurveda requires considering imbalances in the body, particularly concerning Vata and Kapha doshas, which are linked to respiratory health. The situation is indeed serious and conventional medical advice like a lung transplant or oxygen support must be considered vital. But Ayurveda can still play a supportive role.

First, ensure he continues following the prescribed medical plan from his doctors. As Ayurveda can help complement this, here’s some guidance that could ease symptoms and support lung health, mindful of ILD’s severity:

1. Diet Adjustments: Focus on a diet that pacifies Vata and Kapha. This includes warm, cooked foods—soups, stews, and khichdi. Avoid cold foods, dairy, processed sugars, and anything difficult to digest. Emphasize ginger, turmeric, and black pepper in meals as they aid digestion and can help clear mucus.

2. Breathing Exercises: Pranayama, specifically Anulom Vilom and Bhramari, can improve lung capacity. Begin slowly, ideally under a yoga therapist’s guidance to ensure it fits his condition.

3. Herbs and Remedies: While considering supplements, seek guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner. Tulsi (holy basil), Pippali (long pepper), and Vasaka (Malabar nut) are traditionally used to support respiratory health. These should not replace any necessary medical treatments, and their use should be customized after consulting an Ayurveda specialist.

4. Daily Routine: Maintain a routine to regulate circadian rhythms, ensuring he rises with the sun and winds down at sunset. Consistent sleep is key for his body’s healing processes.

5. Stress Management: ILD can be challenging psychologically too. Techniques like meditation or gentle yoga might help manage stress, potentially impacting overall wellbeing positively.

While Ayurveda might offer supportive care, it cannot substitute the immediate, necessary medical interventions for ILD your dad requires. His primary care should remain with his medical doctors, and any supplementation or lifestyle Adaptation should be openly discussed with them to avoid unwanted interactions or conflicts with his ongoing treatment.
