Overcoming severe anxiety and chronic depression isn’t easy, especially after years of relying on psychiatric medications. But an ayurvedic approach could support your journey towards mental wellness. It’s important to remember, not to hastily stop your medications—coordinate with your healthcare provider as you explore alternative solutions.

In Ayurveda, anxiety and depression are often linked to imbalances in Vata dosha, leading to an agitated mind and nervous system. Tailb (oil) massage can be particularly beneficial; gentle Abhyanga with warm sesame oil or Ashwagandha oil can calm Vata, soothing your system. Apply it early morning, leave on for about 20-30 min then rinse off with warm water.

Nutritional support is another pillar. Emphasize a diet that calms Vata—think warm, cooked, grounding foods. Include carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes, and season with warming spices like ginger, cumin and cinnamon. Avoid dry, cold, or raw foods which might trigger Vata imbalance further. In the evenings, a warm glass of turmeric milk can be very comforting before bed, aiding sleep and reducing anxiety.

A multi-faceted approach usually works best. A potent adaptogenic herb often used is Ashwagandha—a fine option for calming the mind and fostering emotional stability. Typically, one takes about 500mg of the extract daily, under supervision.

Do try to cultivate a restful bedtime routine. Avoid screens at least one hour before sleep, indulge in reading or listening to calming music. Nasya with Brahmi oil before sleep can be soothing to the mind, apply few drops in each nostril.

Consistency and patience are key elements here; changes won’t be overnight. If at any point, your symptoms worsen seek professional help immediately. Embracing an integrated approach—alongside the supervision of your specialist—is your best path forward. Remember, healing is a process, be gentle with yourself on this journey.
