Depression, overthinking, and the fear that accompanies them can be deeply distressing experiences, but Ayurveda offers some holistic approaches to help support your well-being. Firstly, understanding your prakriti (constitution) and recognizing if any dosha — Vata, Pitta, or Kapha — is imbalanced is important. Often in cases of depression and anxiety, there is an aggravation in Vata dosha.

To pacify Vata, incorporating a routine can be very helpful. Try to establish a regular daily schedule: waking up, sleeping, and eating at the same times each day. This regularity can provide stability to the mind. Diet plays a crucial role too; favor warm, cooked, and nourishing foods. Soups, stews, and well-cooked grains like rice and wheat can be very grounding. Include warming spices such as cumin, ginger, and turmeric to enhance digestion and calm the mind.

Meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises) are particularly effective in calming overactive thoughts. Practicing deep breathing exercises, such as Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing), twice daily can bring a sense of peace and groundedness. A session of gentle yoga focusing on slow and controlled movements can further steadies the mind.

Ashwagandha is a well-known adaptogenic herb in Ayurveda that can be supportive, but it’s essential to consult with a practitioner to confirm it suits your constitution and current state. Brahmi is another herb often used to soothe the mind and improve memory and concentration.

If you’re struggling with intense feelings or thoughts of self-harm, it’s imperative to seek immediate support from a mental health professional. This may mean reaching out to family, friends, or crisis helplines. Ayurveda complements allopathic medicine, so combining therapies can be a wise approach.

The journey to restoring happiness isn’t a fast one — small, consistent steps are powerful. Surround yourself with positivity, indulge in hobbies, and connect with nature. And remember, reaching out for support is crucial. Getting professional help can be a lifesaver and should never be delayed when urgent needs arise.
