how to drink apple cider vinegar in the morning - #36541

Lily

I am really trying to figure out how to drink apple cider vinegar in the morning. Lately, I've been feeling kinda sluggish and bloated, and I heard that apple cider vinegar could help with that. A friend told me it’s great for energy and digestion, but honestly, I’m kinda clueless about the best way to do it. Like, do I just chug it straight? (I did that once and wow, my throat was like burning afterwards.) Or what about mixing it with water? How much should I actually use? This one time, I tried mixing 2 tablespoons with a glass of water, but the taste was sooo strong I almost gagged! 🌊🤢 Then someone suggested adding honey or lemon, but do those mess with the health benefits of apple cider vinegar? I really wanna stick with it cuz I read it can help with weight loss too, you know? Also, is it best to drink it first thing in the morning or can I have it later? I’m just a bit confused and worried I’m not get the full benefits if I'm not doing it the right way. Anyway, any tips on how to drink apple cider vinegar in the morning would be awesome! Thank you!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to apple cider vinegar (ACV) in the morning, it’s important to use it properly to avoid discomfort like the burning sensation you experienced. Apple cider vinegar is indeed quite potent, and a direct shot isn’t advisable as it can irritate your throat and also damage tooth enamel with long-term use.

Instead, try starting your morning by mixing 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with at least 8 ounces of warm water. This dilution not only helps in avoiding the strong acidic taste but is also gentler on your digestive system. You can enhance the flavor and the health benefits by adding a teaspoon of raw honey or a few drops of lemon juice. These additions are fine and won’t negate the health benefits of ACV. Honey, in particular, can aid in soothing your throat and adds a naturally sweet note, while lemon can provide an extra boost of vitamin C and aid digestion.

Drinking this mixture on an empty stomach is often recommended in Ayurveda, as it might aid in gently waking up your digestive system, improving metabolism, and preparing your body for meals. However, if ACV upsets your stomach, consider having it later in the morning or before meals.

In terms of dosage, starting with 1 tablespoon is sensible. As you get accustomed to the taste and its effects, you can gradually try up to 2 tablespoons. Yet, remember to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any preexisting health conditions, especially if you experience discomfort.

Lastly, consistent use is key for any potential benefit, but moderation is crucial—you’re after a balanced improvement in energy and digestion, not drastic changes. Remembering the importance of a holistic approach, ensure your diet and lifestyle align with your wellness goals. Your body will appreciate the comprehensive care. And don’t forget, if you still find it difficult to drink, using a straw can help minimize contact with your teeth!

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
