can we drink sugarcane juice in fast - #36916

Charles

I am really confused about this whole fasting thing, especially with sugarcane juice! I've been trying to stick to my health goals, and recently started fasting for a few days a week, but I'm not sure what I can have. So, here’s the story. Last week, I went to my friend's place, and they had fresh sugarcane juice. I couldn’t resist and had a glass. It was sooo good! Like, way better than I expected. But then I started wondering, can we drink sugarcane juice in fast? I mean, sugarcane juice is sweet and all, and I thought it might break my fast. But some people say it’s healthy, and packed with nutrients. I’ve heard both sides – some say it’s okay in moderate amounts but others say it’s a big no-no because of high sugar content, which basically defeats the purpose, right? I've been feeling a bit weak during my fasts, so maybe it could help? At the same time, I don't want to ruin my progress. What do you all think, can we drink sugarcane juice in fast or should I just stick to water? Any advice would really help since I'm still trying to figure this out! Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

The question of whether sugarcane juice is appropriate during a fast hinges on the kind of fasting you undertake and your personal health goals rather than a one-size-fits-all answer. In Ayurveda, fasting is often used to cleanse and balance the doshas, especially when there is excess Kapha or lessening digestive fire (agni). During a fast aimed at detoxification or balancing doshas, it is preferable to consume mainly water, herbal teas, or light vegetable broths instead of sweet juices.

Sugarcane juice, although natural and nutritious, has a high glycemic index and could cause a spike in blood sugar levels. If your intention behind fasting is to improve digestion or manage weight, this may counteract your efforts due to its sweetness and caloric content. It could lead you to feel momentarily energized but eventually leave you with a crash in energy, especially if your fasting purpose align with reducing food intake.

However, if you are fasting primarily for health reasons like feeling fatigued and weak during fasts, then having small amounts of sugarcane juice occasionally might help. It’s rich in minerals and energizing carbohydrates which could provide temporary relief from weakness. That said, be cautious of how much you consume – monitor how your body responds, and avoid indulgence.

For a more balanced approach, consider including coconut water or herbal teas that help in maintaining electrolyte balance without the high sugar. It’s always important to tailor your fasting regimen according to your dosha type and what feels balanced and sustainable for your health goals. If confusion persists, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice would be beneficial.

Switching back to water for most of your fast will better support detoxification and maintaining a balanced agni, ensuring that your fasting efforts align with your health intentions.

The key to fasting is to give your digestion a rest and allow your body to detoxify. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, fasting is also about regulating your doshas for optimal health. Sugarcane juice is indeed very nourishing, but it does have a high glycemic index because of its sugar content. This could stimulate insulin release and essentially bring you out of a fasting state as it acts like a meal for your insulin system, so, it isn’t typically recommended to consume it during a fast if you are sticking to a strict regimen.

That said, if you’re experiencing weakness, it is sometimes allowed in very moderate quantities especially if you are on a light fasting regimen or a cleansing one, where slight carbohydrates might be allowed to maintain energy levels. However, you must be careful—since sugarcane juice can quickly offset the detoxification benefits because of its potential to spike blood sugar.

If you are feeling weak, you might explore other alternatives while fasting, such as sipping warm water with a pinch of rock salt, or consuming tulsi tea, which can help maintain energy levels without upsetting your doshas or breaking your fast.

Sticking to water is typically safest and most effective for cleansing during fasting, though. If the weakness persists, it’s essential to reassess your fasting approach or consider consulting with a practitioner who can look at your dosha balance, agni strength and overall prakriti to provide guidance safely tailored to your body’s needs. Avoiding something too taxing on your metabolism, like sugarcane juice, aligns better with the fasting principles in Ayurveda.
