Toothaches can be really distressing, and it’s important to address them not only for relief but also to identify the root cause. In Ayurvedic tradition, toothache often relates to aggravated vata dosha, particularly when associated with pain or throbbing sensations. It can also involve pitta dosha if there’s inflammation or heat. First, for immediate relief, applying a clove or clove oil can be beneficial, as clove is known for its eugenol content, which has natural anesthetic and antiseptic properties. Place a whole clove near the painful tooth and allow it to sit, or dab the oil onto a cotton swab and hold it against the tooth.
Beyond clove, warm sesame oil pullings may help. Swish 1-2 tablespoons of warm sesame oil in your mouth for about 10-15 minutes, daily. This supports reducing vata dosha aggravation and may help with any bacterial cause. Post this, rinse your mouth with warm water.
Switch gears to diet — favor lukewarm (not hot) foods and avoid extremely cold or raw items; this stabilizes your body’s inner fire (agnfi) and calms vata dosha fluctuations, reducing pain exacerbation.
For persistent swelling or if the pain intensifies, consult a dentist promptly. Dental infections can cause severe complications if untreated. Meanwhile, sip warm water infused with turmeric and reduce stress on the jaw by avoiding hard foods. Remember, these remedies soothe symptoms but do not replace essential dental examinations or treatments.
