how many amlas per day - #38561

Evelyn

I am really confused and need some advice! I started taking amla after hearing about all the amazing health benefits, especially for boosting immunity and digestive health. It's been good so far, I think? I felt like I had more energy, but I also made some changes in my diet, so not sure what’s really helping. Anyway, I’ve been eating around 4-5 fresh amlas each day, but I stumbled upon a blog that said you shouldn't really go over 2-3. Now I'm worried! Like, how many amlas per day should I be eating? Is 4-5 too much? I don't wanna overdo it or mess up my system. Also, kinda funny—I was putting them in smoothies like every morning thinking that would make them tastier, but now I'm wondering if they lose their benefits that way? Ugh! I really just wanna do this properly, ya know? Also, some friends have said that eating amlas might have side effects if taken too much. Do you think there's a safe limit? I'm just kinda all over the place with this, and I really appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

When it comes down to how many amlas you should consume every day, it’s important to factor in your individual constitution, or what we call “prakriti” in Ayurveda. For most people, 2-3 fresh amlas a day is generally considered quite beneficial and safe, aligning with classical recommendations. Eating more, like 4-5 daily, could still be fine but may not beneficial for everyone, especially if your system is already balanced. You see, while amla is incredibly rich in vitamin C and has potent antioxidant properties, overconsumption could, for some, lead to digestive upset or have a cooling effect on your digestive fire, or “agni.” Especially if you’re more prone to a Vata or Kapha imbalance, which could make you feel heavy, tired, or lead to diarrhea.

As for consuming amlas in smoothies, you’re right, the preparation can affect its potency a bit—especially if you’re expecting to get the utmost from its vitamin C content. Vitamin C is sensitive to heat and oxygen, so if you’re blending your smoothies vigorously or storing them for a while, you might lose some of the vitamin C. However, you still retain many of the other benefits of amla, like its tannins, which are great for overall digestion and metabolism.

Bear, in your mind, any imbalance or symptoms you notice—you might consider lowering the amount if you feel too cool or sluggish. Ideally, you should consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner to personalize recommendations based on your unique constitution and health needs. Mild side effects like those mentioned earlier may arise from overconsumption, but it is usually quite safe when adherred to regular digital process. So enjoy your amlas, stay mindful of your body, and let them work alongside your lifestyle changes for the best outcome!
